I'm in the middle of installing the power steering conversion and it's occured to me that the original horn wiring will obviously not work. How have you guys dealt with this? I want to keep the original column and steering wheel.
Just re-route the wire and plug it back in the way it was if you need to lengthen it just use the same gauge wire and heat shrink the splices since you are keeping the original column and wheel which has the horn switch under the wheel I can't see it being complicated.
55,6 & 7 and earlier have the horn wire from the relay running up the centre of the steering shaft which means you cannot use the original horn setup. The easiest way is either to use a 58 or later column which uses a brush and ring setup or use a separate push ****on mounted under the dash within easy reach.
When he cuts the shaft to install the rag joint to the new box the wire should be right there to splice and re-attach.
I got my kit years ago from Wurthit. I never got all of my parts and he would not tell me how his kit was doing it. So I have an incomplete kit and am wondering the same question about the horn. There has to be a way to do it with the stock column... who has the Wurthit kit with the Borgeson joints?
Ain't gonna happen with a stock column. Two choices are to use an aftermarket column or a dash mounted horn ****on.
That's my question... How did Wurthit do it? He had a kit and my kit was missing the horn pieces. Obviously, he isn't around to ask anymore. Who has a Wurthit kit?
I have Rick's kit, probably the first one he sold for a 55 or 56 with y-block. There were times when I felt I was his test mule. Anyway, the kit came with an Ididit column, tilt with shifter that I specified. I run a CruiseOMatic ******. The column was an easy install and uses the GM "harmonica" wiring connector. I can give you the color code/pin outs if you need them.
When I bought the kit, he claimed I could use my stock column and he made an adapter to make the horn work. I dont know if he was full of it and thats why it was magically not in my kit or what. If push comes to shove and I have to use an aftermarket column, can I still use the stock wheel?
Rick had aline of BS, no doubt. I'm not sure aftermarket columns for Mustangs will work with your wheel. My column is for GM splines. You may be able to respline the wheel. Another thought would be to use a 58 or 59 column. I think that's when Ford went to the rag joint and eliminated the horn wire through the shaft deal.
The 58/59 still used the same shaft through the steering box that 55/56 used but it was solid. You could simply cut this shaft and weld a rag joint coupling onto the end at the length you require. Fix the column outer to the firewall cover plate. The later column uses a completely different flasher and horn switch setup which willow you to make this modification. An aftermarket column will make it all a lot easier instal though you may have to use an aftermarket wheel.
What are you doing to cover the rag joint on the aftermarket column? If I use the rag, it ends up in past the firewall.
No rag joint on mine. A double u joint, intermediate double d shaft and bearing support and a single joint at the rack.
