Does anyone know of a magazine article, or other articles, using a a "cookbook approach" converting a 53 Ford Flat head into power steering. The install is for my 40 Ford with a straight front axle. I'm near 70 years old with a pace maker. I get the same answer from the so call hotrod shops "yes we can do that for you". Then I ask "ever done one before" and I get the same answer, "NO". I find it very difficult at cruise nights/car shows pulling into spots. I don't want to "reinvent the wheel" just "K.I.S.S." Thanks in advance.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...article-for-power-steering-ford-flaty.971861/ Try this article on the Fordbarn - done off 8ba. You could contact the maker/owner for more info. I would use one of the newer smaller PS boxes from CPP. Using one in my 40 p-up now but non flattie powered. I modified the stock mount to install it and Birgeson jointed the bottom of the 40 column to mate to the box and anchored the column at the floor. See you at Spring Carlisle - II29 ! We can talk more then ...
However, note this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/blundell-speed-machine-taking-a-while.624140/ March was referenced late in the article, so may be an alternative.
I've been told that a Chevy 605 is almost a bolt on on '40s Fords. Put one on my '48 Plymouth. Worked out great.
steel rebel is that 605 a number for the power steering pump or a steering gear? I read the R and C article and it looks like a great product. It looks like the brackets and parts could be made by any competent machine shop or a hobbyist with reasonable skills. Tony I think you should take the article and show it to someone in your area and see if you can get the system built. So far I have not seen what steering gear this system would be used with in the 35 t0 40 Fords. Does anyone out there a suggestion?
The 605 is a small G.M. power steering box used in their mid size cars I think in the '50s and '60s. Great little box. As for a pump for the flathead your on your own. I have a Chevy. 283 in my 40 Plymouth and I used '60s Chevy pump and brackets and long water pump. The steering arm on the '48 Plymouth even matched the spline on the 605. I haven't read the above link yet.
