Okey you guys that don't want a '50s bucket like mine or a '60 style like Chips. Study this picture. It is perfect in the Wees way. I would love to see this car built.

One of the project T's you showed us from the Portland swap is an excellent candidate in fact.

Well if I take all the parts in the driveway ,plus my 50 Merc wheels, old hairpins, use my Ford toploader with a Jeep shifter, it would be doable (is that a word?) But do I have to get a 40's Mopar?

I'll bend the rule a bit, my next project is a 50's Mopar.

  7. I personally like a taller windscreen especially as I believe in driving my cars and that would be just too darn uncomfortable for long trips. I know one of my mates drove his old T Roadster from Auckland down to Dunedin for the hot rod nationals and he wore a motorcycle helmet (full-face) so as to have a reasonable comfortable trip. Now if I had a young lady excluding the cigarette sitting in the passenger seat I would be doubly happy.

I think Chip might have problems with his puter, I got a bunch of crap from him, wanting me to know about an Ophra diet, then two days later bunch of crap about Dr. Oz. I think he's been hacked, and stay'n away till its resolved.. Just a hunch...

Getting back to traditional "T"'s, this one has the 60's vibe to it and if Big could fit in, I probably could too. Does anyone find fault with any of the design elements? [IMG]

I do find the Bob Johnston look from the 50's easier on the eyes than the Tweedie Pie rendition with the quad headlight a 6 X 2 intake and extra chrome., [IMG]

Not with the design elements but with the way they were put together. As an assembly, the parts beg the description "cute" which just isn't something I'd want said about my car. It's almost too small to be real.

But jalopy45 touched on what really bugs me about this car - and about a lot of Ts: it's built so that the driver (especially somebody big like Big) looks like he's sitting ON it instead of IN it. Has to do with the seating and the steering wheel more than anything.

And yeah, before y'all get on my case for commenting even though I don't own a T... You are right, I don't actually own a T...but I do own a '40s MoPar, so I'm at least HALF QUALIFIED, right...?

    Dad
I don't know what is wrong with you lately or maybe it is me BUT again I agree totally with you. And like you a little better after you disclosed you own a '40s Mopar. :);)
As much as I like that Bob Johnson build (And it didn't need the changes Big Daddy did to it) it is just a little too short and you sit a little too high in it and all that comes to mind is CUTE when you see it. And cute is not a compliment on your car you want to hear coming from a man. I have never had a man say that about my T but a few women have said it. I just smile and let it go.
I think anything shorter than a 96" wheelbase on a bucket you are flirting with cute.
The Lightnin Bug had 101" w.b. In the Kookie Kar version Norm shortened the w.b. to 96" by installing a later banjo diff. with the spring behind the axle. I'm convinced Ivo copied the Lightnin Bug version so his w.b. was also 101 with the spring directly over the rear axle. Ivo told me it took about a year to build his roadster and in that same year I believe Grabowski was changing his T to the Kookie Kar version. Ivo also said he wanted to flame his car but Norm "beat me to it".

I think I just fell in love, this tub just makes my mouth water. I would love to have this parked in my garage!
I'm not sure, but don't think I see anything I would have to change on it. ;)

Except for the swoopy fenders I like it too. I think the fenders Tim is putting on his Cute T would better.
Sorry Tim I couldn't help myself. A compliment and a dig in one sentence.

Well, I believe that back in the day, cutting up old drive shafts to use in making what we now call lake style headers was a common practice. I remember seeing a lot of what we would consider lake style headers in my uncles 50s hot rod mags. I remember seeing some with the cut outs to an under the car exhaust. One thing I have not seen, was something I remember from the early 60s...lake style headers, with homemade from old coffee cans mufflers on the end. I suspect the prevalence of either the under car or can mufflers was a direct function of the degree of local enforcement of muffler requirements.

I'll be putting Brooklands screens on my T...and a couple sets of goggles. But it's going to be more of a modified than a bucket. I'm also building mine with the intention of it being friendly for trips. But comfortable more along the lines of a "4 wheel motorcycle" experience, than an open car experience.

For me the original version of Tweedy Pie (I agree that Big Daddy screwed it up) was the first car to really catch my attention when I was a kid going through my uncle's old hot rod mags. Fast forward 50 years, and the original Tweedy is one of the 2 cars that are the biggest influences on the plans for my build...the other being Sota's Mutt Special. I know....a strange combination. I'm taking the Tweedy layout and scaling it up 8" in length...and trimming it out in a modified style. In the process I'm addressing the seating issues. Some folks get upset at calling it a T-Bucket...some get upset at calling it a modified. I like to call it Willy's Folly.

I dont have a big collection of magasines but have a fair amount from ca 50-62.
But what i have seen is that lake style headers is far more common today on street driven rods.
And i think that all hade plugs and pipes under the car inclusive this one.

You know Anders this little red T is growing on me. You guys might just be warping my mind with your white steering wheels and chrome rims. It has a lot of kool old stuff on it Banjo diff. '40s Ford brakes and it looks like three pedals.

  29. Dad, a little off topic, but you need to post a pic (or a link to another post with one in it) of your Plymouth! I SWEAR I have one somewhere, but damned if I can find it! I'd like to see it (again) as well. A spec sheet would be cool, too! ;-)

  30. Heck, just post the pictures and details here while we patiently wait for Chip to come back. I am keen to see another Pre 49 Car and all the more interesting if it isn't the normal Chevy or Ford.
