    Beautiful stuff. Can anyone explain why the scoops on the dragsters face forward and all the others backwards? Is there some speed at which forward is better?

    I'm not an expert on aerodynamics and how it affects air flow, but I think it has to do with the fact that dragsters don't have windshields and how that affects air flow over a vehicle.

    ==========================
    I've experimented using both directions.
    When driving across country with six carbs I found that having the scoops backwards caused better air flow than having the scoops facing into the wind. My guess as to why this worked better probably has to to with turbulence caused by too much air trying to force itself into a limited area at higher speeds.
    There is also an air flow benefit to have rear facing scoops in that speed creates a small amount of "vacuum" behind the scoop at freeway speed thus encouraging air to travel into the carb more freely.
    Each application may differ due to different sizes of scoops, air flow over the engine based on whether you have a hood or not, firewall proximity and the speed you are traveling at.
    No two cars, engines, spacial differences, speed and air temperature are ever identical, and yes, air temp does play a factor if you are really going to get picky.
    Another simple reason why some are backwards is just keeping "junk" (dirt, bugs, etc.) out of the carb while traveling.
    As said each car and it's unique elements play into how best this works for any given car.
    Some might work better forward and some better facing the rear.

  22. I may have a bit of info to add here. In the case of Dragsters their throttles are either wide open or closed where as a Hot Rod while driving down the road has the throttle blades just a bit open thus with the scoop facing forward there may be too much air being forced into the carb for the amount of throttle opening.???

    And I appreciate the nuance. Who woulda ever thought! "Man that car's really something ... it's something else."

  27. That Nash is the coolest new car to come along in a while.
