Thanks for info and link to this book. Many years ago, Jay Roach told me stories of these days and to have a chance to see a larger part of the whole story is a gift I will look forward to opening. Greatly appreciate it.

I remember many blower cars like this that used a motorcycle chain to spin the huffer...

Here are a few from miscellaneous places, including the American Hot Rod Foundation:

Luther Wheat at the '55 Nationals in Kansas. He towed all the way from Madera, CA, ran a '49 GMC six.

Tony Waters in his famous A/FMR. After blowing his front-mounted blower ducting in '60, he went to a top-mounted blower on his Desoto (though Weiand didn't make blower manifolds for DeSoto's until '65, I know because I waited 6 months for one for my Desoto), and rebuilt the engine cowling...later went to fuel dragsters...

Marsh & Steffey's streamlined sbc...not sure how well it ran but generally streamlining like this was not worth the weight or the aerodynamics it sometimes produced...Logge chassis

Paul Stage, Rockford, IL...won two Nationals titles, currently under restoration, ID by Chase Knight

Really early history, Lake Wales was in Florida

Dean Lowe mentioned in an earlier post that Merek Chertkow drove dragsters in addition to driving Ed Taylor fuel modified roadster...this is the only picture I could find of Merek, Ed, and the dragster...had to cut it out of a larger publication

No ID on this really early Chrysler powered dragster...

Jarvis Earl, at an early Bakersfield meet. Jarvis started out with a Buick straight-8 dragster with a sprint car-like body and then built this Quincy Automotive-sponsored V-8 car. It later got a full body, and was sometimes driven by Tom Dyer, who later drove the Ansen & Pink Fuller car fueler. Jarvis lived in La Canada, CA, and was a neighbor of Don Montgomery. (Note the custom T-Bird with Mercury taillights behind the Chevy pickup).

...and speaking of Buicks at Bakersfield, here is Ivo. I think he won top gas at the '59 meet, though corrections are welcome!

Edna, KS...back when street-driven cars could compete...

Ok, it's not in motion, and really not a real drag car, but it does have history. This is Ivo's mother's Buick that he won his first trophy in at Saugus...and what hooked him on Buicks.

Otto Ryssman, not sure where, maybe Paradise Mesa or Santa Ana? Yes, it is really crude (Otto cared more about speed than performance), but we had to start somewhere.... not sure who that is in the cockpit....Otto later blew a flywheel or clutch or something, and unfortunately one of the pieces hit a spectator, fatally. Otto had to leave drag racing due to the resulting lawsuit.

Only ID is Irwindale...I don't know either of these cars...I thought that the rear engined car in the far lane was Jim Fox but the nose is different...anyone??

This is the only color photo I have seen of the Shinoda and Goldberg fuel roadster. This is after Larry took the roadster to Detroit to start at GM, and Goldberg came on board with his carbureted Olds. These guys were not shy about their ethnicity; notice the panel behind the door, Shinoda (Japanese-American) has a rice bowl while Goldberg (Jewish-American) has a Star of David. Pretty cool!

Leroy Chadderton, flat out, no lift, off the guardrails, off the end of the track, he did it all.

Not sure where or when or who, but it is a great shot of what appears to be night racing. As far as I know, the first night races were at Saugus, when they borrowed a huge anti-aircraft search light and located it behind the starting line pointing down the strip.....pretty primitive but it worked.

For most of '59 and part of '60 not very many cars (blown & unblown) could beat Ivo's single engine Buick. Light and quick. Other guys eventually caught up, but by then Ivo had pretty much moved on to the twin. Kent Fuller was responsible for a lot of the "catching up" part.
