Every single self-respecting hot rodder has used an air cleaner just like that many times over and they work just fine. They will flow plenty of air though the filtration is a little weak. The chrome probably won't last long either unless you keep right after it.

Personally, I like a larger air cleaner that sits down over the carburetor. Many times I've used a stock air cleaner assembly as the basis of a custom one by cutting all the shrouding away so the filter element shows between the abbreviated bottom plate and the trimmed top plate. It's efficient since it uses the stock air filter element and looks racy as heck in a kinda dirt track sorta way, especially if you use a taller element in place of the short original one. Best of all, if you shop around it could be free.

I've made several over the years for both 2 bbl and 4 bbl carburetors, the principle is the same. Here's my latest creation made from a stock-type recessed bottom plate with a thin 2" filter element and the top cover from a gennie '57 Thunderbird air cleaner. I'm trying to keep the car loosely period correct to the late '50s and this seems to do the job. Maybe it'll give you some ideas...

Thanks for the advice. A guy at autozone was saying that a small air cleaner like that one wouldn't breath enough for a "big" v8 like mine. I do like the idea of the custom air cleaner though so I might have to experiment a little with some different options.

And if youre making your own setup. Take a peek at hub caps... they come in some handy diameters for an air cleaner and all shapes and designs.
Youre for sure on the right track

Thanks for the idea. I'll have to check out the hubcaps I have to see if any of them will work.

I went to a swap meet on Sunday and bought a tach, a fuel gauge, an air cleaner and some headers and an intake for a sbc. I sold the sbc parts to a friend and just about broke even on everything[emoji3] ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430793656.592541.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430793683.101426.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1430793714.808982.jpg
I almost bought some aluminum slot type wheels but I've been thinking I'd rather have plain black steelies and maybe cragars sss in the front.

Thanks! It's been yard driving and will hopefully be on the road fairly soon.

I got a brake light switch and a Stewart Warner psi gauge. I might run the stock psi gauge but I haven't decided yet. Will the 6 volt fuel gauge work? ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1431302900.871357.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1431302994.237237.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1431303039.577326.jpg

Nice SW gauge Sam. The fuel gauge may work. Worth a try but may not be accurate. If you have the sending unit out of the tank you can try it to see how the gauge responds.

Where was there a swap meet locally? I must have missed that.

You likely just eliminate the fuel pump in tank and install sending unit suitable for your gauge. I see the bleeder screw took some time.. many hours have been wasted on those things..a little never seize on the new one?

Good idea! I have the sending unit out to remove the in tank pump anyway so I might as well.

It was in Topsham but I felt it was worth the trip. It was my first swap meet so I don't have anything to go off of for prices etc. I did get a camaro sbc intake for $7 which seemed like a deal.

Thanks for the advice. That bleeder screw was defiantly a pain in the butt to get out! I'll have to check out the never seize stuff.

Does anyone know where I can get some wiper arms? Especially this little knob that's missing. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1431727970.181438.jpg Does this look like it would interchange with GM stuff? Thanks.

Sam, I have some of the GM wiper ends. Will have to see if they are the same shaft size. You going to be at the Island run tomorrow?

Its out of an 02 sonoma with a v6 which is why it has the rear sway bar unlike the s10.
    Thanks!

    So it's like a bolt-in for your S10?

Yes it bolts right in except for the sway bar. I could make mounts for the sway bar but I think I'll just throw it up on Ebay.
