Hot Rods Fastest hamb friendly street car?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by JimSibley, May 17, 2015.

  1. Window in the bell.

  2. is that clutch a mcloud and is it a single disc or twin?

  3. racer-x ! Thanks for the tip , and the tire mixture . Maybe I will try that on the radirs, instead of bolting on my MHs. I have run them at the track as low as 12 to 14 lbs with fair results. anything higher than 17 lbs or so and the car wants to fry them in 1st and 2nd. We will experiment this season.

  4. Tis a single Ram Sintered iron disc with a Ram p-plate modified with Tim Hyatte billet levers.

  5. thanks i have thought about doing some thing like that. i run a mcloud twin disc that has no adjustment. it can be hard on parts. do you go back and forth adjusting it every time you street drive it or race it?

I have a switch on my shifter, that changes my torque converter from 1500 stall to 3000 stall. There was some neat technology available in the mid 60s!

    :)

  7. i have heard of the switch pitch convertors. i have never run one. was that a buick and pontiac thing.

Buick and Caddy, and some Oldsmobiles. I've been using them for 35 years.

  9. Yes,it takes about five minutes! I have a starter button wired up and bolted to the framework of the trans tunnel and just slide under it hit the button til a allen screw lines up with the hole and adjust it,hit button and move on to the next one.

  10. i will be looking into this more. thanks for the info. what is the cost i think the cloud is about 2500

  11. Your welcome.Sorry I don't recall,ALOT cheaper than a twin disc I yam sure!!!

  12. Yep what the squirrel said, some late 6 cylinder Chebbys had them in 11" too.

I exoloded one @ 70 mph once and will stay with the simple normal stuff from now on. Ruined a transmission case, took out the front pump and well was just to pricey for me.

Edit: Nope I was wrong the late chebby was not a switch pitch it is a lockup. Sorry.

The SP300 two speed transmission used a smaller diameter switch pitch converter, it will fit in the SP400 transmission. And converter guys have been raising the stall speed in them since the 60s.

  14. It's not generally talked about but I did have an extremely fast Rambler at the first HAMB drags in '03
The clocks must have been malfunctioning that day as they recorded a time much slower than the car felt.
I haven't had a car of that caliber since. Just amazing hambdrags8small.jpg hambdrags4.jpg

Not the slightest bit streetable of course, but Pure Hell still does over 220 in the 6es without wheelie bars -

OKL Street Outlaws style. My '32 vs. a 10.80 '51 Chevy (400ci built LSX on a 200 nos plate).

Paradise road is still my favorite scene in any movie.

I doubt mine is the fastest, because there is always somebody faster !!:D:D I . only got one run on it with the clocks so far, drove it 330+ miles to the melt down drags (how appropriate of a name..)and it burnt 7 pistons, and tuliped 5 intake valves, because i was a meat head and forgot to take timing out of it (for the traction at the track, it just spins on highway, so it won't detonate because of little or no load., and I drive it A BUNCH !! ).. OOPS !!! So I had to loosen the valves, for clearance, and drive it the 330+ miles back home.. dang it!!
That run took off real easy(no wheelie bars yet) rolled into it gently, it banged the supercharger, and i coasted 11.40@ 41 MPH DAGNABBITT !!!! Then put in new goodies when I got home..dang it !! maybe this year I'll get a good run ??.
The thing rides really nice and has really cold A/C and power windows..
We take it on long trips, and go to events out of the state, WE DRIVE IT. very common trip for us is 300+ miles one way .. .. it's only on a trailer if it's BROKEN>>
LOL Hope this year to have wheelie bars on it,and get stand on it,and get a decent run at it.. DOH !!!
My opinion, is anyone who goes on drag week, is my hero, and that's the truth.. I wish I had the time off,and $ to go on it. Although my car isn't legal to race with those guys,(4 point roll bar) Just making it through drag week makes you my hero in my book>>. period. No matter what your car runs.
Also, if it's a stick shift car, you are mt hero too @!! wow, that's a real racecar.
I wanted to build my car with a lenco, but I also wanted my girlfriend to be able to drive it.. So I went with a manual shift 400 Turbo.. DOH!!!.. Turns out she doesn't drive it anyway !!
    WTF>>>?? dang it !!
Now it would be too much work, and $ to change it.. I can dream can't I ?? LOL so it'll be a 400 turbo for a long time.
you guys have some absolutely awesome cars, and you should be very proud of them , no mater what they run!!!

  18. tricky steve your car is bad ass. drag week will allow your car to run in the street machine catagory. this class has a 10.0 max et. a four point roll bar and a steel unaltered firewall are all thats needed. get on the waiting list for this year all the tracks are close to your home this year. we would like to see you there. look up the rules at drag week 2015. i hope your bride is doing ok.

running faster than 11.00 might require a cage, in a car like that. And the minimum legal roll bar for 11.50 cutoff is 5 point.

Nice car! Keep trying, you'll get it all sorted out eventually.

  20. the unaltered steel fire wall is the key for nhra per the rule book. if the fire wall is cut or made of alum then the cage rules go into place.

The floor also can't be altered....ask me how I know!

with a car like an A that is just a bunch of pieces of wood and metal screwed together, you probably want a full cage in a car with that much motor. no matter what the rules say

  22. It was the fastest Rambler until the other Rambler showed up!

Hahaha it was fun watching the rivalry!

thanks for the compliments !! racer X I don't have the $ to go this year anyway, but maybe I can sneak up and see you guys !! you guys that make drag week, are my hero !!! set up quarter panels.jpg inner structure no more wood.jpg

very last day of rest for coop.jpg

it looked a bunch better sitting there, until i lifted it up,and the right quarter panel came off !! and 40+ bullet holes..and the bottom 8" was gone.. yuk.
my firewall is steel. and the floor is .090" aluminum..
dang it !! I'll sign up for next year for sure !! thanks for the info !!
Also, thanks so much for thinking about my princess.. she is done with chemo, but has to get "maintenance " ..some antibiotics, for 6 more months, but looks like all the cancer is in remission.. yaaaay !!
thanks so much for all the help, and good thoughts :rolleyes:

Not sure if it has been mentioned here yet, and not sure of acceptance(rules makers) but clutch turbo 400's have been used on the street before. I read in the recent past about Maverick Performance doing a reissue on these(kits) with some parts improvement since the 60's version. Probably not for the "wallet challenged" though.
A little research shows an Aug. 2011 HAMB thread by 69fury on Clutch Turbo 400's,
a member called Calgasser says he uses one in his street driven Henry J.

Hey, now that i'm thinking about it.. we have a few extra beds here at the house, (about 4 or five, depends if you count the couch) we are about 35 +/- minutes away from the track, maybe some of you guys and girls, and small dogs : ) can sleep here the first night before the drag week.and maybe the last night after , just have to see how it works out !
Might save ya some $ ,and we can do any last minute fixin' here at the house >> might be fun anyway.:rolleyes:
google earth it , or map quest it...

The original question was what is the FASTEST Hamb friendly street car. Everyone is talking seconds. I always thought speed was measured in MPH. I've seen Hamb friendly street cars cars run in the 150-170 Mph range at Loring and Willmington.
