I think the devil thumbing his nose is called a cock-a-snoot. I have a few of them plus a rare one of a devil with a long tail thumbing his nose.
Legend has it, owners of cars would install them as a gesture to those who still used a horse and buggy. Could be a pile of horse crap though........

  3. Are plastic firearms traditional? Put that with a Smith revolver!

Here are a couple of pics of the devil with a tail. It looks like it's made of brass but I doubt if it is. The mount is just a cheap plastic gas cap. You can see some of the detail work on his butt.
I also have one or two devils painted red which is more appropriate for a devil ;)

Well, my Dad did restore an Auburn cabriolet in the 80's that was pulled out of a ditch, but it looked like this.

  6. I can remember seeing the devil thingamabob around for a long time and always figured that they were a '50s thing, I guess they are older then that in origin.

neat story about an old guy that probably will never ever end up in a magazine or history book although he is part of it. ;)

  8. Keep posting! Get him talking about the earliest days he can recall. Firsthand history of our hotrodding heritage can never be recovered once it is gone.

Self defense is as traditional as it gets, no matter how it's handled right? I guess the devil in the pick might be aimed at the revolver crowd, but I digress. For those who know what it is I think I'd get a pass. PM me if you want to know since this isn't a gun forum. It's the only pic I have of my patron "saint"...

  10. Damn, that looks like at least a couple of weekends work right there!

  11. That's a great idea. I will see if I can get him to open up on some old car stories. Glad you folks like to read this stuff. I also enjoy hearing about how things used to be. I'm a little tired of hearing about the Baltimore and Ferguson riots. We all know Global Warming made these people turn ugly! Ha ha!

  12. My dad had the devil cap on his 31 Sport Coupe in 36/37.
Also, I wish we could see pix of that 31 3 window that the old timer just sold

You could mount that on your car in a different way than a radiator or gas cap. You could replace the the nut on the bottom with a nyloc nut and safe t wire it. No way someone could remove that during a show.

  14. No, but some dirtbag would be pissed because he couldn't steal it and would break it off just for spite.

Exactly what I was thinking. I used to hang out with some restorers at a shop where all the guys there restored model A`s etc. and they went nuts every time they found one of those. Same reaction when they found what they called a bud vase, a glass vase accessory that would hang on the side of a car to put flowers in. I always thought these things were weird prized pieces but they loved them. The old guy that gave it to you was probably giving you something very valuable to him.

  16. Here is an update on my good friend Carl. He is in the hospital now as a result of some type of leg infection ( he said it started after he was doing yard work. Remember he is 88!). So in this thread I mentioned he made some spark plug connectors for his 1935 Auburn Boattail Speedster. Well, a few weeks ago, he and the wife towed the car up to Newhope PA, for the Auburn-Cord Duesenberg Club Tour. The car won Best of Show and Peoples Choice Awards! He said it ran great and the weather was perfect. Here are a few pics of Carl and Barb enjoying life. Scroll, down to the pics and story. Hope he gets out of the hospital soon. Ok .......I sorry for the tease but I need to figure out how to link the article. Stay tuned!

I think I can safely say that "we all" hope for the same thing. If they'll let you in, give him a visit and sneak him an ice cream.

(Wish I lived closer.....I'd try to talk you into letting me mold a copy that mascot. I dabble a bit in backyard metal casting. aluminum so far, but wanting to stretch my legs into brass/bronze.)

Not to derail your thread here, I worked in a GM stamping plant as a die engr, the youngest die maker there was mid 40's. So I had this old guy working in my area, had to be in his 70's, but real fit, always there early ready to go. He didn't show up for a few days, I got a hold of his committee man and asked of they can find out what's up, I was worried something happened to him.
They said he's fine but won't be back til next week. Guy comes back to work and I ask if everything was ok, "yeah just been in jail a few days" What? "Yeah some guy was talking shit to my girlfriend, she's about 40, in the line at the grocery store, so I punched him, broke his jaw and nose with one punch, ha, still got it" then he walks away. Turns out this guy was a golden gloves champ and in his younger years used to get off work and walk into a bar and ask who wants to fight, knock somebody out, and go to another bar.

I've got the utmost respect for the tool and die makers I worked with, amazing talent. Unbelievable the totally destroyed shit we put back together. I was lucky enough to know to shut up and after a while they taught me a lot.

  19. Funny story Indyips. I grew up in Chicago on Canfield Ave and they the old man had enough and finally moved everyone to Elk Grove Village. We had a nice easy suburban life. Good thing we left Chicago or I am not sure how long I would have lasted. I liked to fight as well but I'm sure I would have met my match or ended up in Cook County Jail. As it turned out I did a 180 and became a Maryland State Trooper. Funny how life works.
