Sprayed the top of the cab to get things rolling again. It's not perfect, but way below average.

I decided to go ahead and seal it up and spray the bottom of the cab as well. The hardest part for me, is just saying, "That's good enough" and moving on. It's just an old work truck and I have to keep reminding myself of that.

And finally paint. It's just old cheapo paint, but I like the way it laid down. It's Hot Rod Flatz, Dark Brown. I have heard it's Omni, but I can't confirm or deny. I did ta;lk to our local sign painter, Rick Knight, and he knows exactly what I am after. He's very knowledgeable about the fonts of the 30's, so I have no doubt it will have the right look and feel on my door art. I think the door art and a nice contrasting color on the belt line between colors will tie it all together.

I am such a dork though. I thought I would be all sly and make the door jambs the same color as the interior, but I didn't think about taping them off farther back. Now I have an Ivory colored picture frame around the door. Ugh......what's another few days? Guess I'll respray the door jambs. Anyway, I will try and post some more progress later. I'm going to try and shoot the bed this weekend.

What about a nice 1" wide "pinstripe" just inside the door jamb?

    Looking better all the time!

  6. Looking good, thanks for the update!

  7. Nice work. Don't you just love when your idea (leaving door jams another color) sound great until you execute? Ha live and learn. Keep up the good work. It will all come together. Can't wait to see door art.

  8. Greaaaaat.....now my keyboard is soaking wet. Thanks Bret! LOL

Looking good Chris!! Hope my paint on the Merc turns out half as good in another week or two. I'm with Nosurf, too, how about just painting just the very outside of the jamb brown, like to the next step down and leave the inside part of the jamb white to still match up to the interior?

I probably will Dave. I'll have to see how I feel when I get there. The only reason I even mentioned it, was to try and spare some poor sucker the extra work.

  10. I just stumbled upon this thread. Great work! It's nice to see someone not afraid to use Rustoleum! Half of my truck is covered in it!
I've been using the same Cadet tan on my wheels and bumper of my 48 F1. I've seen the same color listed as Cub Cadet tan and International Harvester white.

Besides my '55 F100, I also have a '50 F-1. You shared some great tricks here, especially the one about the Tanks, Inc. pickup/split ring flange!
Now, the tank will be useable.
Just great tribute to your Grandpa, a novel idea for sure. (my Dad's business truck was a '29 Roadster P.U. The door logo said, "ACME AWNINGS". This preceeded Disney's use of 'Acme' by 20 years) I still remember our 1940s phone#, before we got our new 'dial phone'.

That is looking more like a truck all the time. I'd agree, just go in and paint the inside lip of the door jambs back to a stopping point. That is what GM did on AD pickups like mine and probably a lot of others were done the same way.

Thanks guys. I wanted to show that a guy can build a traditional hot rod without breaking the bank.

This is a great thread. I really like your rear springs and shock mounts. I'm storing away some solid ideas for my '35 Coupe chassis....

View attachment 2912818 Been working slowly on the Produce Truck. I got the bed painted, even as rough as it is. I wanted to get the running boards mounted but I ran into a small issue. The brackets I used in the rear parallel leaf setup are interfering with the installation of the running boards.
    IMG_1988.JPG
I had to relief cut the flange on the rear of the running boards.
    IMG_1981.jpg
Did some trimming and it was good to go. Not something I thought about when I started the install on the leaf spring brackets.

Now, I don't normally go for the bling, but I have a soft spot for Limeworks stuff. This steering wheel was bought for me by my wife, from Steve at Limeworks over 10 years ago. His stuff is like man jewelry.
    IMG_1977.JPG
The column drop is as nice as they come. I figure the driver's seat is like my office when I travel and this thing is being built to haul the major miles, so I'll splurge on the office decor. I also changed the color of the dash. It toned it down some. I also went back and painted the door jambs to get rid of the white picture frame effect.

I bought the cheap Speedway hot rod column because it was the perfect diameter to match the steering wheel base.
    IMG_1978.JPG
I decided to try something on this build. I have seen these vibration dampeners advertised in the catalogs. It's supposed to take some of the vibrations out of the column, so that you don't feel every crack in the road. I'll let you know how that works out. I bought the wrong u-joint, so blue painters tape will have to work until I can get the right one shipped to me.
    IMG_1985.JPG
Hopefully, I will get some more done over the long weekend.

This is a super nice little truck. This is the kind of build I'm a big fan of.

Today is Fat Mat day. I bought the 80 mil Rattle Trap. I used up a full roll of 50 SF and still need t do the doors and floor boards. I am waiting on the 200-4R tranny so I can finish up the floor boards and tranny hump. Still trying to figure out what to do about the battery. I am thinking of mounting it under the seat on the right side, but I need clearance for the subs hanging down.

How much of the fat mat did it take to do the inside of the car?
