It can be like wet paint. some people just can't stop them selves from touching something that looks good. I don't know it they have to see if it is real or what. One of the first things I taught my grandson, when we go to a car show, is don't touch any car whether or not it has a sign or sticker that says "don't touch"

Actually, the "4-wheel motorcycle" analogy is exactly how I've presented this project to her from day 1...but she's nothing if not persistent...LOL. There is another aspect of this project that I've not talked about that goes along with the motorcycle connection. My wife's brother was an avid motorcycle rider and collector. He to is now disabled...and can no longer safely ride. My wife has latched on to the idea that this car will be something that will catch his attention as a way he can get out on the road again with his riding buddies...just with a couple of extra wheels.

I guess the question I was looking for input on is the functionality of a short hoop like the one in the pic. I would have no problem doing something like that if it actually served a purpose. I'm of the opinion that they have little to no function. Am I wrong?

Personally, I would like to see you move this type of discussion to a thread of it's own so we could get back to the business of the good and bad in the T bucket world :)

Every roll bar is different, Bill, so there is no "they" to discuss, only individual roll bar installations.

In general, a well designed and well built roll bar will keep the body from collapsing around the occupants in a roll-over, assuming they are held in place by seat belts, so the roll bar certainly does perform a function.

As the many photos in the "Roaring Roadsters" books show however, the arms, legs, shoulders and heads of the occupants are not restrained and could still be damaged even if the structure of the car remains relatively intact. The good news is that these appendages are flexible and capable of moving to the side, bending if you will, of their own accord during a roll-over event. Drivers of some of the most horrendous roadster roll-overs walked away with few injuries. Others, even when roll-bars were used, were not so lucky.

It would be my considered opinion that a modest roll bar such as in the red bucket I posted above would be beneficial because it gives support to the body and provides some protection for the torso of the driver should the car go over. Would it be 100% effective? Probably not.

A taller roll bar in the same car, on the other hand, might give marginally better protection, especially if the driver were taller and the seat higher. But would a taller roll bar be 100% effective? Again, probably not.

So, if we assume that there are degrees of survivability which are directly related to the roll bar height and complexity, with zero roll bar being worst and a full Bonneville-legal roll bar being best, we can conclude that, all things being equal, the better the roll bar the higher the probability of survival.

Or not. It all hinges not so much on the equipment as it does on the nature of the crash itself.

Sorry, I thought we were discussing roll bars in T-buckets. Did I miss something...?

Blue One is right. While this thread has occasionally (ok, often) wandered off topic, it is about a particular subject.

Okay, I'll bite. What's so off-topic about roll bars in T-buckets?

Yes, this thread has wandered quite far off topic on more than one occasion :D, I just feel that Zandoz has a lot to say, and a lot to discuss in regards to his project and ideas, and most of it shouldn't be here.
A thread of his own would do his discussion more justice and we could get back to our usual ramblings that are sort of kind of on topic. :D

This discussion on roll bars is just the latest tangent on his projects ideas. :)

Well, it's only my opinion but I'd say that a discussion of the esthetics and effectiveness of a roll bar in a T-bucket is spot-on topic, regardless of who brought it up. Sorry you guys don't agree.

It's not just the roll bar thing, It's the whole scope of his project ideas that seem to have landed here, while in reality a discussion thread of his own would be better and as I said do more justice to his project.

The latest roll bar questions were on topic more so than some of the previous questions. As Larry said, he might be better served if he did start his own thread with all of his questions.

Maybe nobux if you put about ten pretty girls in front of the lower picture above it might improve it some. Make that twenty.
That is the poster child for what this thread is all about. You might be able to improve a great car with a little good taste but you might just come up with something grotesque.
Oh FUCK he put big ugly disk brakes on it. I hadn't noticed that before.

The pretty girls would have to be naked ;) And then there would have to be enough of them to completely hide the "car". :D

Are there any updates on the 2015 LA Roadster Show / Swap Meet ? Will the layout be the same as last year, and will there be a parking area set aside for T Buckets? Bob

I was on the LARS web sight a couple of days ago and the only change I noticed is that they are letting the driver and one passenger in a finished roadster in free as in the past. The last few years they were charging $20 for the passenger. I doubt if they segregate any cars.
What I plan to do is drive my roadster in early Friday and then do the Friday stuff in my truck. Friday afternoon I will buy two swap spaces and set up to swap. My roadster and my truck should be in the swap spaces all weekend. See you there buy some of my shit.
Bob post a picture of your bucket. Not sure if I remember it. I have a friend in Ct. building a K. K. Klone.

    And quite an improvement.

  20. No guys, absolutely nothing could improve that picture of that , oh, I am strggling to even call it a car. The black T Roadster is the Ivo one under a different owner I believe and to me, who happens to have a fetish for multi-carbed engines, is darn awesome and is an excellent example of a perfect T Roadster. Now to improve that picture one would only need to remove the lovely lady.

As Norms health became worse, I hoped and prayed that he would somehow get his T Bucket back. Sadly, it didn't happen. That 6 tire monstrosity should and could be the poster child for the movement against adding crap to simple hot rods.

I wonder if Norm's old car meant as much to him as it did/does to us. He moved on and I don't think it held any fascination for him after he sold it. I would love to see it returned to the Kookie Kar look. Others however would like to see the Lightnin Bug. The present owner likes what it looked like after he changed it to the above look. If it was restored it would probably be over restored to present standards as all the clones have been after Franko's. Even his Lightnin Bug klone was rebuilt and over restored last year for the Grand Nationals.

Yep, and speaking of that, Gary--I won`t be able to make it to LARS this year. There are a number of things up in the air, including another possible trip back to NZ to finalise my Mum`s probate arrangements. Not sure yet, but I`m running out of time to get everything in line. You will all have to do without me. I`m sending young Tim down as my representative, emissary, taste tester, etc. Make sure you all take heaps of pics and share `em here....:(

Sad to hear that, Paul. My brother and I booked our tickets a couple weeks ago, so we'll be there at least for part of the weekend. I'm a bit bummed that I didn't finish the car in time, and even though my new job is a lot more taxing and cuts into hot rod time, I don't regret quitting my old job one bit. I went over to the garage for the first time in about two months on Thursday night, and let's just say there's plenty of work to do lol. I'm gonna be back at it this week I hope.

Sorry to hear that Paul but we all have to "take care of business" as the King used to say. Glad to hear Tim will be able to make it. Haven't heard from Chip but he should be there. It'll be a little different for me this year in the swap area. I'm in a cleaning out phase in my life right now. I purge every few years. I just get overwhelmed with crap.I sometimes regret it like all the Multi Aldritch Bonn. stuff I sold to Trdel. Well we'll get together sometime when you,Tim and Gary get your buckets together.

I had no idea Norm's T looked like that in the end, very sad. Back to the LARS, is it true that Friday is open to vendors only? Bob

No Bob that is not true. You really need to google L.A. Roadsters 2015.

Bob I just checked he LA Roadsters web site. I guess spectators aren't able to walk in until Saturday. I always had my roadster and finished roadsters and swap sellers are allowed in Friday. Really their web site answers all your questions.

I apologize for the drama I've unintentionally brought here. The reason I've not started a thread of my own is that in my mind this project is not to a point to warrant it. Right now it's just a pile of parts and plans...and the plans are still evolving. Plus, this project will never be "HAMB friendly" except for the esthetic aspect, which seemed to me to be what this thread is all about. This thread has already been a big help in developing a focus for the esthetic aspect of my project, and for that I thank you all.

  29. No worries Zandoz. I don't think your at the point of starting a build thread on your car either, but maybe a general can a traditional hot rod be adapted to accommodate one's disabilities might be appropriate. You might pm Ryan first and make sure it's ok with him. I don't believe the guys were trying to attack you, just trying to steer the thread back towards it's stated goal of mid sixties T bucket de-uglifying. You asked questions and got answers, some were more on topic than others, but it's not like a ton of other things were being posted at the same time that your posts took away from.
