Two very dear friends of mine(Susan and Dick Lindkvist) retired about five years ago and one of the things on their bucket list was to travel on route 66. They planned to take their 33 Ford coupe and packed whatever clothing would fit in the trunk and a laptop and on May 1st set off on their journey. The 33 is powered by a 302 SBF with AOD and a 9 in. rear.A/C and cruise finish it off. The plan was to drive from their home in Auburn Maine to see their oldest son Jamie in Baltimore for a bit and then head west.Every day Susan would do a blog of sorts in the laptop and download the pictures they took along the way. The trip took about six weeks and encompassed about 9600 miles and except for a couple of minor glitches went very well. For those who might be interested in reading their day to day exploits;here is a link to the site: https://thursdaynightgang.shutterfly.com/route66suedick As an aside;the coupe now has about 100,000 miles on it and will be making the trip from Auburn to the Back to the Fifties meet in a few weeks. If you are attending and happen to see a flamed 33 Ford 3 window with a few battle scars on it stop by and say hello to them;they are great people!
Were they able to drive on an unrestored section of route 66? There was a section about one mile long where Hwy 40 crosses into Kansas As far as I was told and understand it was the only section remaining of the original 66. If you have the time this would be a great adventure.
Thanks for the info - I am planning a Route 66 trip with my pop this fall , and will read through their website as soon as I get a chance . I need all the pointers I can get , LOL !!
I believe it's like a dozen miles in Kansas of the original 66 and I've driven it some twenty years back.
The stretch between Kingman AZ and Seligman is I believe the longest left and I think it 62 miles long. Great drive and lotsa history. Here's a pic @ the Sno Cap in Seligman a few years ago comin ba ck from LARS
Thanks for letting us enjoy your trip with you. Our trip last year was only 2600 miles from the Oklahoma panhandle to the Gulf coast of Texas. We were in our 31 Ford coupe hotrod . Had a blast and in a hotrod you are a one car car show at every stop. What I enjoyed was the guys that had a 32 like that one time. Your story got me wanting to hit the road again. We live 125 miles north of Amarillo, Texas by the way .Thanks again.
I don't know if you are aware but there are pictures that go along with the story. At the end of each segment there is a link to click on pictures.
