I just picked up a 1950 Ford F1. Complete truck with clear Florida title. I am attaching pictures of the condition it is in as or right now. I am sure the motor is locked up (flathead ford, not sure which one) and a 3 or 4 speed (not sure of that either) I can shift the transmission. I am not worried about the motor or trans, I have a 292 Y block and 4 speed to drop right in that is in running condition.

    My questions are....
#1 Would you all put time and effort into fixing up
#2 If yes to #1, to what extent would you fix it, just to drive and enjoy, or full restoration?
#3 If chosen to fix up, or restore, where can I find a good source or restoration parts?

So throw some ideas out there, let me know what you all would do. If you need more pics, just let me know.

  5. All comes down to your skill level.
Have you done this before, cause the fact your asking makes me think your maybe new to this.
I'm sure you could find a nicer one to play with, but down my end of the planet, someone would be happy to fix that up.
Repo parts are plentiful, so my take on your question would be two questions, do you have the skill and will to do it, and do you have the money or time?

I have the skill level to do a full restoration, not quite sure about the money side of it.......
I can build my own patch panels, I am a certified welder, I have an English wheel (not HF) planishing hammer, shrinker stretcher, shot bag, assorted mallets and body hammers, welding machines, break press, etc.... I will be building a home shop before too long.

Not that I am questioning my skills, I am just curious how other people would view a project like this.

Time is a whole other ball game, never have enough of that.

IF I told you, you would laugh and not believe me. I have spent more on lunch than the truck....

The first thing I would do now that you own it is check the frame for rot. That truck must have been near a coast and the salt air really did some major damage. If the frame is sound you could get it running safely and then try to repair as you drive it but I think that truck may be to far gone to try this method. That's a rough one.

Wasn't one of you choices but I would use it for yard art.

That was my plan from the beginning. I will be examining the frame sometime this week for rot.
At a quick glance, the frame is fairly solid. It made a 8 hour ride on a trailer without snapping....

  16. So skill level no issue, comes down to time, money and passion.
If you don't have a lot of spare cash, having the time would be your best option, but you say you don't have much of that, so i would give it a clean and flip it. You could then look for a better one.
I wish I had all the equipment you have, as I'm lucky to have spare time between being busy with my work.

I have looked at a lot of Fla vehicles, usually a lot of rust if they were near the coast and usually rust from top down due to salt air, unless they lived near Daytona the they rust from top down due to salt air and from the bottom up from beach driving and salt water/sand.

Beautiful trucks when done, if you have the skills to do the metal work and fabricate most yourself AND the time I would go for it.

How much time and money do want to spend on an F-1? I would try to save some of both by starting with a better truck.

This on was almost on Key West, right next to a canal.

They are cool trucks. Lots of character. I could do all of the metal work without a doubt.

  23. Yea maybe find a better one to build and use this one for parts?

No offense taken. I like your style/thoughts.

  25. The poster ask what others would do? honest reply's have absolutely nothing to do with making us feel warm and fuzzy.

All the power to a man that has the skills and the time to repair a truck that rough,I don't doubt for one minute you can't make a show piece out of that poor old heap, but the amount of time, discounting the money issue and it will be a long time before it's up and running.

I can understand sentimental attachment to a car or truck,I've been there, done that....or maybe you just want to expand you skills and prove that you can resurrect something that most people, including me,would use for yard art.

None the less, you are the one that makes the final decision.

If you do decide to bring it back from the dead I'll follow along! HRP

They are not rare enough to try to fix that much rust. The best thing you have is the title!

I am very busy with work, but I manage to find the time for my projects.
I know this isnt the correct forum, but I am restoring a 1970 Nova that had quite a bit of rust and needed alot of metal work, that is why I have most of the tools. I built the English wheel (pic attached)myself, but bought the other stuff.

Man, That's a lot of rust. You could make a fun driver out of it, but I'd look for a better specimen for a re-build.
