296 Ardun, on your posting #43483, the Bob Sullivan car was most likely a Rod Stuckey chassis.

The GMC was Chet Herbert's, loaned to Ed for a few months. The Carburetors are Riley side-drafts, converted to a floatless configuration, as Chet felt the round floats took up too much volume for fuel applications. The fuel was supplied by a remote pump with a pressure regulator, and the carbs had return lines, compensating for the lack of floats. Regards, Chase

  6. I don't know which is more interesting here... ? The car itself or its surroundings...

    Hi Chase

Do you have any idea what the spark plug was doing sticking out of each carb, maybe just for grins!!

Might as well mention that Ed's 36 coupe was located in PA, verified by Ed, and is being restored by the current owner. A flathead V8 is going back in it. Chase

    Hi Dave

I think the Fosberg chevy fueler in your pic might have been the second car, as the first one was shorter and a different looking roll bar but a giant killer too

Always enjoyed seeing them run each year at the smokers meets , as that little stroker small block was doing it's thing

Thanks!...this fills in a lot of blanks...Chet was an amazing hot rod engine engineer, I had no idea that this was his engine, lots of hot rod history in one post (and good to know that the car has been found ...)

Don, I wondered about that...I think that the first one is the one I saw at SG, this one does look longer, I also think that it did not have a chute pack like this one did...thanks for the info!

The first one might have been a home built frame, before they all started building the single hoop roll bar's that pretty much looked alike

    ...or this one...anyone?

Jim McClellan made the long tow to Cordova, IL for the Nationals...maybe the Greek behind him?

    gstuckey6.jpg
and, speaking of the Greek...to me, one of the best cars he had, the '64 Stuckey car...runs you never forget, Bakersfield Smoker's meet, Don Maynard, the Greek's engine guy, was killed in a road crash on the way to the meet...Chris decided to go on without him...late afternoon run...not much smoke, long flames out of the pipes; 7.99, at that point, the low et of the meet....silence after the run until Bernie Mather, the announcer, quietly said, "that was for Don Maynard." I doubt that anyone who saw it, me included, will never forget it.

OCIR, No ID, can anyone identify those wheels?

Don, I remember that short wheelbase F&H car but can't find a picture of it (searched Don Ewald's site, saw it there once, but...) But I did find this earlier F&H car, with caption...(which says they beat Garlits, it was close, but Garlits won...)

    sangabe24.jpg

Hubbard & Forsberg C/FD at San Gabe in 1962. Running under the banner of Vic Hubbard Speed and Marine in Hayward, the Forsberg and Hubbard Chevy was the Northern California "Giant Killer". They made the front page of Drag News when they beat Garlits at Fresno. The photo is undated, but I'd like to think that it was May 12. On that day Denny Forsberg set low ET of the meet at 8.44 seconds and won Top Eliminator. One of the other competitors that day was the late Bruce Woodcock who drove the Rakers Car Club Chrysler to a track speed record of 185.94 mph. Steve Gibbs photo - commentary by John Hulsman

Found it, it would help if I spelled it right, two shots of the first Forsberg and Hubbard car that Don referenced:\

On the right, Fremont, getting ready to race Shrank Brothers blown Desoto

Fremont, I think (both photos from Don Ewalds's WDIFL site)

These guys might have run out of money after a few years , then I think Logge Stamping car started carrying the flag for the un-blown chevy fuelers

By then the 392 fuelers were going a lot faster and getting harder to beat for those small cars, but it was sure great while it lasted seeing them win !!!!!!!!

  20. I think the first car is the Surfers after they went to the bug catcher. Tom Jobe was the only one running without an idler on the blower belt in those years.

Yes, I remember the Greek's 7.99 run at Famoso, and the announcement that the run was for Don. A very special moment at one of the best events in drag racing!

Did Eddie build his own frames in the later years, as the roll bar looks like it is two half's welded together and comes to a point at the top

Most cars used a single bend for the main hoop , joined by the back bone then down under the seat

There is a lot that was different about this car, the injectors, the roll bar, even the face mask...but that would be Eddie.

    Tom,
I dig the old photos. Do you scan them or photograph them? I'm trying to photograph some but they are all coming out fuzzy.....

Odd Couple, Sponsored by Ken's Automotive -- Walt Stevens driving (thanks, Don)

    $_57 (6).JPG
Crossley, Williams, and Swan (or some combination thereof)...this Bakersfield car had numerous partners and drivers...the last was Rick Stewart, who pulled the chute and had the entire back half of the car detach...wasn't badly hurt but it was pretty clear that they had flat worn it out!

    $_57.JPG
Not sure whose Dragmaster this is, Pontiac power suggests a Mickey Thompson tie...and is that Jack Chrisman at the wheel...San Gabriel (thanks Dean)

Don't know whose flathead powered roadster this is at Lions...someone went to a lot of trouble to remove the door outline on the T body...

    JereWilsonIrwindale1969.jpg
The caption is "Jere Wilson at Irwindale...1969...Jere Wilson was a Denver Co fuel guy, this was a later Chrysler powered car after he started with a blown Olds with a Scott injector....he was a shoe, I remember watching him at Denver International (long since closed) drive a fueler (maybe this one) through the lights after grenading the motor so badly that a spectator was hit in the knee with a piece of it...parts, fire, oil flying everywhere but somehow the tires were still smoking....

    macs cars Picture 143.jpg
From the Dave McClellan collection...not sure where, or when, or who....anyone? (there have been an amazing number of identifications on this thread)

    perryville06.jpg
Before the Speed Sport roadster, there was this flathead powered fuel dragster, Lords Car Club, Tucson...Maynard, Fisher, and Greth... Don Maynard in the middle, Red Greth on the right, thanks Dean Lowe

Most are just lifted from facebook. I do have a scanner that a pal loaned me. I use it quite a bit.
