How can one car bring so much joy to so many people. Simply amazing !

  4. I've said this many times, maybe here already.
Most of the time the car you find will talk to you
and tell you what it wants to be.
Jer is one of the very fortunate ones that knew how to listen.
And the rewards just keep on comming.
    Again,
    Great job Jer!!!

  5. True enough, much joy (& frustration to a few I think) - First car show this past weekend, I had just backed the car into a spot & before I was out of the car I had one ol' timer hot rodder walking up to me & then a couple more right behind him - it was a hour before I could get away to register the car for the show !
Great to talk to these guy's, either they remember the car from back in the 60's or they had heard the local "legend" story of this car & wanted to hear all the details & some wanted to give me crap for being the lucky SOB that got the car - I lost track of the people I spoke with, one guy was trying to get my contact info. for a friend of his who seen me driving it a couple weeks ago in town - apparently this guy remembers it from the mid 60's & couldn't believe his eyes when he seen it driving around - I think I will be getting a phone call soon - ha ha -
2 highlights of the day were "Algoma 56" (the kind soul who saved my bacon with a gearset for Snewp's gearbox) stopped by for a visit - unfortunately when he stopped by I was in a nearby restaurant having a bite to eat, he was also accompanied by another local hot rodder who realized that Snoopy was the same car he helped build the motor for when he was a student at the local highschool in the early 60's ! - & he even stood on the back bumper when they ran it up on the Dyno to keep it loaded ! I wish I was there to meet him (he was gone by the time I got back), however I know who he is & will be making a phone call in the very near future, I think he will have some good details, he was recalling porting & reliving etc. on the motor... just ausome, "Algoma 56" caught me when I returned from lunch to let me know this info. I was stunned.
Then along came the 2nd owner of Snewpee, he gave the car a good looking over, nodded at me, then asked to take it for a ride, I declined as the show was still going on, but I offered to come by & see him at his store, he accepted & then turned to his wife & blamed her as the reason why he had to sell it - ha ha

Can't believe I will be getting more details on this car - so very lucky.

  6. I've said it time and again,.......sure it's about the cars but, it's really about the people.

  7. Agreed !!

Just got off the phone with a fellow named Eric, he was enrolled at the Tech School when the motor was built for my car back in the early 60's ! He recalled the shop teacher (an old school englishman) was pretty sharp when it came to motors, they ported & relived the block as well as the over bore, no aftermarket parts, just improved the stock configuration the best they could, he said the day that the original owners buddy Bob (he guy who is responsible for most of the fabrication etc.) brought the Model A to the shop was one he will never forget :)

They hooked it up to the chassis dyno & when they started loading it up the back tires were breaking loose on the rolls filling the shop with tire smoke (car was too light), Eric & a couple classmates were assigned to the back tube bumper for ballast & that was enough to keep it honest & he said that Flatty just "sang", can't recall the numbers but said it was a decent improvement over stock, especially considering no performance parts, just hours & hours of labor !

I have been invited to drop by some time when I'm in his end of town with the car - an invite I will certainly follow thru on !

  9. I was able to check another "reunion" off the list this afternoon - Martin the original owner & I headed out (with Martin at the wheel of course) to locate Martin's sidekick on the project - Bob, who as Martin claims should be the one who gets credit for the build as he was the welder, fabricator etc.
We show up at Bob's house, his wife directs us to a local autowreckers where we should fine him doing some welding, we take a ride across town, drive behind a shed where we are directed to find Bob and there he is staring at the car as we drive up, with a very "focused" look on his face, when we pull up he looks at Martin & says "Marty, don't tell me this is the same car we built", Martin laughs & says "it sure is, this is Jeremy the new owner" Bob goes on to tell me "I failed Grade 12 because of this damn car !, I spent so much time on it", there was numerous "Son of a B@#!%&, My God, It's Exactly the same, I Can't belive It !" comments made :) He was stunned.

Bob is on the right, Martin on the left & Bob's older brother in the middle.

I have his email & he wants more pictures :) It was a good visit.

And the scrap guy was kind enough to weigh Snewp's - Full Tank, No driver = 2540 lbs

    A very good day !

This story keeps getting better. How wonderful to talk to the original builders.

UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME !!!!!!! The only thing more appropriate would be for you to be in that photo also. You are the new owner in the group and none of this would even be happening if not for your part and contribution to the whole (so far) history of this vehicle and its people.

It'd be a real kick if Bob or Martin had any of the original build pics....If there were any.

Just got caught up...been away for awhile.

I think you have learned that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination.
You will remember this trip for the rest of your life....congratulations, you have done a wonderful thing, be proud.

This is absolutely the best 4 hours I've enjoyed in a while! Excellent job with the car!

  19. The "Big" Car Show for my area is coming up this weekend in St.Ignace, Michigan - I'll be headed down for 3 days :) Allthough I had the rad flushed & tested I never properly "flushed" the engine, so I did a deep clean/flush on the car over the past couple days, definetly stirred up some grime & even some sand ? Also got a photo album together with some rebuild pics & "as found" pics as well, trip odometer will reset to 000 on my way to the show as it's at 976 miles right now -
I think there are a couple fellow HAMB'ers here that go to this show so I'm looking forward to putting a face with a name, should be parked somewhere near the Colonoial House (Big Ol Yellow Place) roughly in the middle of the show.

  20. I'm going down for the afternoon on Friday. Have to go back to work on Saturday. Will stop by to see you.

The sand is likely left over from the casting process. Us Studebaker folks see that a lot in our blocks.

  23. I was wondering about that, remember reading that somewhere... well guess that means I have it cleaner than any previous owner, seeing I stirred up casting sand ha ha.

  24. I knew I was forgetting something !, Here are some pictures :)

Drilled & tapped the cap for 1/8 NPT, used a 90' Fitting, soldered a tube barb fitting to the 90' & then fed a chunk of hose between the tank & trunk floor out on top of the rear frame... seems to do the trick ! (not pretty, but functional - fits the rest of the car !) Hose has enough slack that the cap un screws without hose binding...

  25. Got a phone call from a guy last night who wanted to buy Snewp's when the 2nd owner had it for sale back in 1966, he was 200 dollars short & couldn't scrape any more money together, sounds like he anguished over that ever since... he seen Snewp's driving around back in May (& was stunned and said to himself "thats my car") & has been trying to track me down since, his buddy got my name at the car show couple weeks ago... He wants to buy it from me, I explained that its not for sale but gave him the "story" on the car and invited him to come see it when I'm back from the show, he is looking forward to it & wants to bring his wife so she can see the one that got away ! Guess the second owner had a 45 player in it at one point ! & he mentioned this car was one of the earliest full on "hot rods" in town, him & his buddies only recall a truck that was before this car which is long gone, he believes I currently have the oldest hot rod in town & 2nd oldest in town overall historically.
Amazing how one car can stir up so many emotions / stories... he asked to be put on the list of people that want to buy it... I think he is #3, right behind the original owner & 2nd owner...

Your bond with this car just continues to flourish. I wonder if when you started this journey did you have any inkling that it would become so substantial? And is it as fulfilling as us with unfinished works might hope?
