Not sure how far this is from you but quoted $325 for new on my '54 should be close in price, shipping is what ****s so might be worth the drive: http://www.streetrodgl***.com/cl***ic_car_windshields_truck_auto.jsp
My '59 windshield that I got last week, the shipping was $159 from Sanderson on the west coast to NY. I think Auto City Cl***ic would have been $150 to ship. So it pays to shop around. The thing with old used gl*** is the safety, or lack of safety if its an OG piece. Auto gl*** changed quite a bit starting around 1965.
Thanks for the link Jeff. I have been getting quotes for around $500 everywhere I've called for just the gl*** not installed. I have the new rubber seal and trim but nobody will touch the install for less than $150 and they won't guarantee it will seal properly and that they won't break it. I can install the gl*** myself but $500 seems pretty expensive to me for one window.
$150 is not that bad. I just had the one in my '59 done yesterday for $125. It even had to come out... the lower trim popped out just enough on one side. WD40 will remove black butyl adhesive off NEW paint. The '55-56 windshields are a lot easier. I got this guy through my mechanic and all he does is travel installing gl*** locally.
If they are installing the seal and stainless on the gl***, then 150 imho is a cheap price..particularly if it's a house call. When I did mine last week, I was also having trouble keeping the trim to stay put during handling. I solved the problem with a few drops of Gel super glue in the problem areas (corners)...a few drops on the stainless, pull the rubber in place and hold it for 10 seconds and it'll stay put. You don't want to go crazy with the stuff in case it's got to come apart. I spent way more time on installing the trim and seal to the gl***, and cleanup, than I did on the install into the car. I really like the butyl stuff they used...gooshy, but cleans up easily even days later. Mineral spirits also works.
We wound up taping the trim to the windshield and it worked fine. The butyl sealant also comes off with masking tape.
I don't know if the windshield on a 54 is the same but u have one. You'll need new rubber though I'm in ventura county
Auto city cl***ic will deliver it to swap meets they are attending free of charge. The new one I picked up at the Pate swap meet was 275 total. They'll need a few weeks lead time, so if you can wait a bit, give them a call and see what their schedule is for meets near you.
Hey I'm in SoCal do you need a front or rear gl***? I have a rear gl*** but if you need a front I know a guy in Santa Ana that has some used ones
