I've seen two or three Roadkills but not that one. Seems like it's doing what all the other shows aren't, being realisitic. From what I've seen it shows realistic budgets, time constraints, real world problems and solutions. Hopefully the producers don't turn it into a drama fest like all the other shows.

I'll have to look for that episode.

Sorry guys, the wife commandeered me last weekend and drug me to the mountains. Her family has a cabin in Fish Lake National Forest in Central Utah... man, did I need to get away!

A few weeks ago my son Austin and I worked on cleaning up the 1957 283. Again. Two rounds of Gunk and multiple rounds of oven cleaner in preparation for paint.

The plan has been to run the SBC and a 200-4r. We pulled the PowerGlide, fought with the torque converter and flex plate and began the search for stuff that would work with the 200. Then a friend dropped a bomb, how was I going to mount the starter?

Duh! I hadn't even considered that I'd have issues there, but the 265 and early 283 have a midsection between the engine and trans that the starter mounts to. They didn't have provisions in the block for the starter. Some research reveals that there are adapter plates to solve this. Shit, now I have to order one....

So anyway, not a lot has happened on my end and Bob's been waiting on me. Bob did get more parts painted including brake lines, trans mount, etc.

Well, with some instruction I'm not too bad at the cut n' buff thing. Bob had me do the inner fender wells to develop a little technique and understanding of the process. Still have a lot of learning, and this isn't the best picture, but it's like glass.

  15. Yeah what he said, too darn easy and it happens so darn quick to burn through a edge. And please don't ask how I know...

Learning as I go and SO FAR haven't made any mistakes. Both rear wheel wells are done and look terrific! It's really tough to get a good shot of this as it looks kind of streaked and cloudy. Oh well, trust me, it looks great!

Tomorrow I'll work on the firewall, then the rear panel below the deck lid, and if there's time, the tulip panel. Wish me luck!

Well my luck ran out. I have sand scratches on the tulip panel, but I think I can res and and buff it out.

    Firewall...
    1436828564017.jpg

Taillight pan before. Lots of orange peel and a little garbage.
    1436828594653.jpg

    Cut it with 1000/2000/2500...
    1436828665363.jpg

    Round one with the buffer...
    1436828696151.jpg

    Round two!

Tulip panel getting cut with 1000...
    1436828777073.jpg

And round one with the buffer.
    1436828824380.jpg

I went further with the buffer but the number and depth of the scratches kind of let the wind out of my sails. I'll hit it again later this week.

I also rebuffed the fender wells and they look amazing. I'm learning still, and need to learn when and where to stop especially near edges. I haven't gone far enough out as you can see in several shots. It will be corrected.

Not sure if I'll do bigger panels like the cowl, doors, deck lid. Not that I'm intimidated but I really don't want to screw up a big panel and have to repaint it!

More to come later this week.

  21. Eric, are you color sanding all the way to 2000 grit? Gotta get all of those coarser scratches out......dark colors can be a bitch.

I absolutely hate color sanding and buffing........but the end result is worth it!
    Carry on.

Yep Steve, starting with 1000 but stopping before the orange peel is gone so I can use that as a gauge when sanding with 2000. Once that looks good I'm going over it thoroughly with 2500. These are all wet paper, soaked in a bucket and using a spray bottle to keep the surface wet. I'm probably stopping too early with the 1000 but I'm trying to err on the side of caution, even if it means more work.

I'm pretty sure the scratches came from a small tear on the edge of the 1000 grit paper. I'll start with the 2000 again, then work up to 2500, then buff.

The color and depth are phenomenal!

When I did my Willys back in the day I used liquid brass cleaner to polish it up, took me twenty plus hours. JW:D:D:D:D

Oh, you know, some guy that also goes by Scott! Ha! Sorry brother.
At this point I'm still enjoying the work and seeing the efforts of my labor and how to correct problems. I'll have a lot more than 20 hours in this when I'm done, but I'm slow being a beginner. I'm sure someone skilled could do this a million times faster than me.

  29. Eric, Do yer 1000 as you already are, then go to 1200, then 1500. 2000, 2500, 3000,4000. Then all ya gotta do is a finese finish.
Looks like yer not gettin the 1000 out goin to 2000, Doesn't take much longer to do the 1200/1500 cuts. Try it U'll like it.
