I think Tater and the cat deserve at least one ride, after all, they did all of the supervising. And I think they did one hell of a good job!

yesterday i went to a friends machine shop and used his lathe to turn down the new wing bolts for the valve covers. the new bolts were made for valve covers with a 3/8" or smaller flange but the ones on this motor are a couple inches. the threaded portion of the bolts did not unscrew from the handle so i could not put a longer threaded rod and even if i could they would have stuck up too high. he had a lathe with a collet [?] chuck so i could pull the wing off and slid the shafts in without damage. i swopped out the washers supplied with ss and trimmed the threads to length.
i was also going to repaint inside the fins but these were last painted when my dad built the car and they look fine with their patina DSCF4212.JPG

i then put the door panels on. i used a piece of tape to mark out the spacing. the screws had to be placed evenly, without hitting a nail tab, door screw or open space. i then moved the tape to the other door so they matched. i also found, in my stash, a brand new standard horn relay. so i wired it to the the horn button in the center of the wheel. my dad had a button under the dash because the wire was no good in the column. this is the first time this horn button has worked since at least 1957. DSCF4216.JPG

In a couple weeks you'll be the same age for the first time. Only a Hot Rod can do this to grown men.
