Pertronix

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by grubbygreg, Jan 24, 2013.

  1. Got an ignitor2 and flamethrower coil on our 235 stovebolt and on my 218 Plymouth flathead, both have worked faultlessly and were easy to fit.

Only issue I had was on the Plymouth, instructions said to leave ballast resistor in place if it had one. Plugs started failing real quick, a few phone calls, ballast resistor disconnected, never had a problem since.

    Works great and looks stock.

I,ve had 2 of there coils die, both on different cars with not many miles and they would not warranty them!

    BUMP.

Old thread but the original questions never got answered. My situation is our old Intl fire truck, still in service (we have a second, brand new rig as well), can be a little picky to start, needing the right amount of manual choke often gotten wrong by newer recruits. Anyway:

With the Igniter 2 and Flamethrower coil can I open up the plug gaps? Will it improve starting and idling? Or should I just put in new points (it gets maybe 10 hours of run time in a year so point wear is not that big a deal) and know it's reliable, which is a major concern. Yes, I have read their website..

Most lightly it wouldn't do much for your starting!

But I can tell you that it will do a lot to make sure that it runs better wet, dirty and for a long period of time!
    With less maintenance!

The issue with your starting is, according to my experience, the carb that is "temperamental" or holds the personality!

But ignition, usually is a on/off deal, unless wet.
    But some carbs needs fetteling!

I run a Pertronix-like setup (lumenition), and have nothing but good things to say, it performs better, more consistence and it don't care if it been standing for a long periode.

But I would run a Blue Bosch Coil, they are cheap, and delivers a wooping 24.000 volt at flash! And they work with and without Petronix. It gives you better spark and if it does no different to you starting issue, I would go true the carb.

And in the long term not play with it,
till next time you needs to do points !

My two cents, for free. [emoji41][emoji4]

The spelling nazi would likely point out that there is one "R" in Petronix, and two "R"s in Pertronix. The two "R" version is correct.
I've got an ignitor II in my 56 New Yorker, and it's been flawless.

Same here, Pertronix 2 with matching Flamethrower coil in a 327. Never had any issues, starts and runs great. I think the important thing is to follow directions when installing. I have seen too many mix & match stuff with poor results.

I've two ignitors currently installed old cars, another in my old 600 ford tractor, another in in laws 72 f100. I always use their coils & make sure I get the low ohm jobs paying attention to the install gaps for the trigger & open plug gaps up .010 more. A couple been in there over 6 plus years & still working flawlessly. Great product & tech. I sell these regularly at work & I've learned to educate installers & it makes for less customer induced problems & saves me having to write up warranty info. Kinda like when that battery you just sold me went bad as their kid then tells dad in front of you that mom left the key on all night. Yep battery's fault , give em another......... Flux

Yes you can open the gap a little, we usually recommend no more than .005" to .010" more than stock. Unless you have a really lean mixture there is no reason to go more than that.

Uh, What? Before the company was renamed as PerTronix they were PerLux - no idea what pertrionix is, but then I only work for them. LOL

I may have bought my last PerTronix If I ordered one I'd most likely spell it wrong.

Glad to hear that :) The first one I installed was back in the mid 80's in a 66 Mustang. Done well over 100,000 miles on it and still running strong. Never would have thought back then that I would be Designing Headers for the company some 30 years later :)
