I have a lead on an dual quad intake for my dodge 318 poly but it originally used WCFB carbs. The question is, is there a modern 4 barrel carb that fits the small base of the WCFB intake? In particular I was thinking of Edelbrocks maybe. I know someone here will have the answer.
Nope, Holley haystack, Stromberg 4A, and the Carter WCFB. No modern carbs have the old square pattern. You will have to use an adapter, which is readily available, for the Edelbrock carb.
WCFB cores are getting pricey. and there are two different WCFB base patterns, neither of them will accept AFB's ( or "edelbrocks" as some guys call them...)
Surely you could find a couple of WCFB's to keep the period look? BTW what's the poly going in? I'm interested in anything Poly and have 2 in hot rods.
There are two different WCFB bases, large and small. Your intake most likely has the larger pattern. As far as adapters go, use the OLDER Trans Dapt ones; the Mr. Gasket/Cal Custom type are basically junk, and will leak/cause problems loosening. Those have the bolts/washers/nuts that "fit" into cast recesses. I have an old aluminum SBC/283, 4 barrel intake manifold with the larger WCFB and Rochester 4-Jet pattern. This manifold was originally used on boat engines, but I've also been told it was used on tanks; it does have some olive drab paint on it (???). The Tran Dapt adapter fits perfect, and a re-badged AFB to Edelbrock carb sits on top. I would have just used a WCFB carb, but they are under 400 CFM. I am Butch/56sedandelivery
Start here, and read everything heathen, cactus1 and I post over the next three pages or so, paying special attention to heathen. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/lets-build-a-265-chevy-v8.416175/page-13#post-7536696 Assuming, of course you want to read some stuff about WCFB's that actually has at least some basis in fact... man, I am being so kind and helpful lately...feels kinda creepy...
The biggest problem with 'modern' carbs is that two of them are generally too big for a dd 318. Now, a 402 stroker project is a different story. Keep in mind that although the WCFB are getting up in price, the 'new' carbs are bloody expensive...... .
Fwiw, Holley installed 390 cfm, vacuum secondary 4-barrels on the old 361 and 391 6-wheeler truck engines. They are PN 1850 type carbs, only less cfm. I had one of each before some SOB stole them. pdq67
The Holley is a great carb, but a new 390 is pushing $500... and, I'm not sure that a pair of 1850/8007would fit well on an older manifold. Your results may vary. .
If you're looking for the correct WCFB carbs, try Philip Cancilla at Custom Rebuilt Carburetors in Middlesex, NJ. They won't be cheap, but then neither are those new Holleys.
