HUBBA HUBBA my 32-4 Tudor tribute to Gramps

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Runnin shine, Jul 15, 2015.

  1. To make it easier, why not buy a '32? I've got a chopped '32 Tudor body for sale - it has lots of bondo under the old, somewhat shiny paint so needs some love that you are planning anyway - I'll give it to you for $4000 USD with an old stock floor to piece together (was a channeled hotrod with the floor cut out). I'm guessing you could sell off the '34 body/frame for at least a couple grand making it much more affordable.

Has nothing to do with horizontal... It's the pivot points, if you were to line up the wishbone pivot and the draglink pivot points then good, but that's a aweful short wish bone

image.jpg Also make sure to look at the stock eyebrow above the 3w windshield then a outlaw 3w gl*** body with it eliminated.... Looks a little funny

Hey there, Mr. Nicest Guy you know, you have tapped into two "fanatical" groups, both correct in their beliefs. Please move forward carefully, for these groups are very sensitive, and have their feelings hurt very easily. Good luck with the mix.

Gary I certainly hope I don't hurt anyone's feelings. I'm currently worried about my own though. I do try to be diplomatic with my posts, most of the time. Most guys here are just great and so it keeps me coming back for more. But sometimes I'm worried I could get kicked off the boat for wanting to think as forward as the greats before me. I once again would like to state that I'm not claiming this will come out as cool as the elite. I just want something close to what I can't buy. I believe my good ol'American ingenuity and the HAMB's can get me to someplace close that will not be embarr***ing or a *******ization of cl***ic steel.
    I bought a Indiana 1934 plate and a 32. Mostly want to go 34 as it will be a mostly 34, bought 60 percent. Although I view it as being a 32 1/2 or more like 32 3/4. [emoji38]

I have been rounding up more pieces and I'm going to get it a day sooner than I anticipated, Sat. be home Sunday so on Monday if you guys want pics of its depressing state let me know, K? Wyatt, hey ladies...Hubba Hubba!

A lot going on over here, mostly planning. I got these mid century movie theater seats
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1437763875.927688.jpg
Going to re-engineer them to look more army surplus maybe olive green, make side bulsters w/dimpled holes, pivots(so the backs will fold down now), bottom brackets, and resize either the tops or bottoms to have similar proportions. $15!
Also started getting new gauges to keep the others for my truck
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1437764137.836063.jpg
Going to do the same Chevy to ford conversion with this one as I did w/ the other speedo. Don't have a pic but I believe some SW oil and temp like I have for the truck will be on their way. Very cool.
    And...

Three of the four "my fav" hub caps have been procured. I love the tired original condition. They even look good on Runnin Shine's wheels. But they are more of a Hubba Hubba type of Hubcap.

Oh yeah, I'll make a rear seat with matching whatever I use fabric with a stock'ish shape.
Finding a front windshield frame that's old isn't so easy, and why does everybody snake me out of the stuff I really want on that "auction site"?!!! I know swaps and the HAMB cl***ifieds are cooler and a better deal but I don't have the luxury of time and patience to be limited by the narrowed selection, you do what you gotta do.
I go to get the car tomorrow afternoon.[emoji39]

Thanks! It's gonna take some work to make them cohesive. I don't want it to look cheap or "rat'esk". Initially before I went and picked'm up I wanted to recover them in Mohair. Now I think something more military or industrial will fit the seat frames better, you?

My truck was worse when I got it, much worse pitting all over the PU's body, no original paint long gone. This thing was clearly sitting in the weeds or mud up to the floor. The rear bones are rusted through back at the axle. It has juice brakes on the rear but they're are almost completely rusted away, literally. Most of the side frame rails are rusted through too. In front of the body it's rusty but not pitted or rotted out. I bet the weight of the body with no engine or front tins sunk it down deep.
So obviously the floors, inner wheel wells, rockers, door bottoms, and lower cowl sides are gone. I knew the windshield frame was shot. I'm not sure about the fabric tops channel yet. But I am probably most bummed about the rear lower panel being bent up some(besides the rust to the lower body line) from the cab being pulled down onto the gas tank, not by me.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1437877382.868416.jpg
Now some of you would find this a pile destined for the landfill. This is what I can afford and I love the challenge, not to sound like a book worm, but my brain needs the stimulation, I find it to be exhilarating. And just plain fun thinking about it.
I will proceed with the 32 frame rail replacement. I'll keep the rear crossmember, save the x member, and modify the front to work, it has the cl***ic breakage issues but was still going. Gonna use the pedals and parking brake lever. The front bones and axle are destined for my pickup. I'm stealing the s**** and linkage off the firewall. I didn't even look if the column drop is in there, lol.

Oh it's official... I am in love with it already. After I got the kids to sleep I spent a while in the dark and rain looking it over some and taking measurements. The body is actually not as wide as I thought. I am pretty sure I won't have to narrow it. I'm also not worried about the cowl swap at all. The rear wheel wells is a different story. I've never used an English wheel or shrinker and stretcher. Another bummer is the rust on the inside of the panels. I don't won't to sand blast it. It's not really the strength of the panels I'm worried about, it's how ugly they look inside the car and I don't want to paint over the rust either, I'll think on it. Gonna need some 32 rails pronto! I received some good original door handles in the mail. Steering mast is rusted away but I can save the column drop. The dash is in pretty bad shape don't know if some one will pay much for it, 3w's are a fortune so I might just use a sedan's. There probably won't be garnish moldings on it for a longtime, also pricey stuff. Pics soon but it ain't much to look at let me tell you. But it's home now and I love it.

It is good that your feeling optimistic about it, that is the best way to be IMHO. Looking forward to seeing it transform into the rod in your vision.

So I lost my sandblasting provider today. They are under new management and turns out they won't except $70ph to save my parts anymore. The previous employees were supposed to be charging me an industrial rate of $180ph! My bill for some of my PU parts and Hubba Hubba's cowl top and hood tops was $925!!!!!, thankfully we worked it out to $350 for five hours labor. But we have parted ways. So I'm on the prowl to handle rusty stuff like this...
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438006968.346431.jpg
I will do the windshield "jams?" And roofs top channel myself, but the mess it makes at home is a pain.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438007145.300134.jpg
Now this isn't down to an eighth inch or anything but the good news is the 34 dash and 32 sedan or PU at least are the same width. The windshield opening is actually narrower by 1". I'll see what a 3w's is and compare. I'm concerned with the way the belt line is not the same shape as my 32 hood's
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438007708.183686.jpg
If I use a 32 dash do I use the 34 style windshield regulator or do I just make it swing out, I have some pieces to do the latter.
    Before...
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438008201.285176.jpg
    After...
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438008244.407403.jpg
I'm starting to already see past the rust.

    Runnin,
Have you thought about mol***es for the small to medium size parts, and dustless blasting for the body and ch***is?
    Plenty of threads on mol***es.

Runnin Shine, I applaud your drive and ambition but I think you need to really think this through before you proceed.

If you really want a '32 Tudor then scrimp, sell and save enough to get what you REALLY want instead of creating something that quite frankly will be atrocity and not period correct by any means because they simply did do things like this.

'32 Tudors bodies can be had for decent money especially in rusty condition and I saw a nice roller with an engine recently in California for $10K.

I was in a similar situation about 10 years ago because I had two horrible '32 5w bodies, one was a Roundy Round car that did not have a straight panel on it and the other was a 4 door turned into a 5 w coupe with homemade quarters, so I sold both of them and with the money I made I bought the 3w coupe I always wanted. I am so glad I did not bury tons of money and time into those 5w when they really were not what I wanted.

The reason you are getting a lot of resistance on here is we have seen this before and usually it turns out horribly bad and the owner is stuck with a bunch of butchered parts and a broken heart.

I would encourage you to slow down and think this through.

I was die'n to snoop around the roof channel to see if I can keep it cause I want to leave it open with just the wood cross supports.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1438023205.969784.jpg
This is the way it basically looks anywhere I dug down in there, which is nice. I will paint this area when it's ready. The body is staying the original black version 1.0, although I know what color I want if it stays in the fold for awhile.

Shine: I've had to accept challenges in order to afford stuff. Don't be deterred. There's others on here that will cheer you on as well, some already have. I'm in the "keep it a 34 camp" but do however you choose. Go back and look at Kirk Hannings sedan build, again and again. Stay with it!!! Tim

I really like the plan you have, but I most confess I would love to build a 33 with a 32 cowl!
I might be because I'm Danish, and over here a 32 Tudor has two suicide doors.
So a 33 would be a natural evolution on a euro-32, with a roof that didn't looks so Model A.

And I would go with a east coast build, channel, no chop. I don't like them chopped, they look so street rod'dy.
but with a 32 grill, full hood and a pinched and bobbed frame, tugged behind the grill.

But that's what I would do, and I'm not you, but I can't help my self. [emoji57]

Thanks Tim! I have hinges. I'm trying schmooze the wife so I can pick up my rims in Louisville instead of paying shipping( if somebody wants the wheels off Hubba Hubba they can have'm I'm running out of room here) and to maybe locate that "extra goodie" that helps out.
On the subject of support here... I really like this bunch of guys. Having said that, I am afraid I'm gonna have to agree to disagree. I truly believe I can see this thing in my head(I am only human so I might be wrong) not looking stupid. Most would back me up on this that I'm no more intelligent or artistic than the fellas from the 40s, to me this doesn't seem much of a stretch. Now this is not directly for Tex but I don't buy the hole "they didn't do that" line. Do I believe it probably wasn't done? Yes, but who's to say what was in the heads of young men dreaming 60 years ago. This car culture flourishes around poetic and artistic license and interpretation. And not every hot rod built makes it to notoriety or into do***entation and history. I refuse to drive or dedicate sp**** time and fundings to something that doesn't charge my batteries. True I said I prefer a 32 but letting the ol'noggin think on this "Frankenstien" I have found myself preferring this dealio than the former. One being the suicide doors....awesome! Two the curvature of the windshield frame top...beautiful. Three the built in drip molding lip on the roof. Four is the belt line. Five the "curved" window openings. Lastly I love the shared angle of the door front and A pillars, I'm afraid to alter this doing the chop although I had thought I wanted a lakes look to it. The roof as a whole is just plain *****in.

    Yep!Yep!and Yep!
Full hood, I need this to tie the grill in or everyone will mostly see it as a 34 w a 32 grill slapped on, ugly!
I forgot his name but I love the green 32 that guy from France built. This is what made me think of the suicide doors and Tudor as cool.
My pickup is sorta east coast with the channel and probably no chop or small one. I want this one to not look like that I know fender less high boy and chop is getting cliche.
Oh most likely will have no frame horns because I want to pinch it behind the grill like you mentioned. Leave the axle un-dropped but in front of the frame, Go Doane! I'll limit originality to the front sheet metal swapping around.
