Here's question for the paint gurus.... If you have a formula for a color but the paint is discontinued, can that mix formula be 'crossed' into a current type paint? The particular color is/was a three stage deal and has defied*****ysis by those 'paint readers' that take a picture of it. It's a OEM color but no 'official' paint code has ever been available.
If you have a formula but ,,,,no paint code has ever been available??? If its an oem color, some insurance company has had to pay to re-do it. There are probably more but the only one I've heard of is a mustang color that only ford guys painted.
This was a motorcycle color; if repairs were needed 'back in the day', you simply bought new factory-painted parts. The formula was came up with by a owner, but the type/brand of paint he used has been discontinued for at least 7-8 years (PPG acrylic lacquer). The catch seems to be the mid-coat; it's got a lot of what I think is pearl in it that makes the color really 'pop' in the sunlight and that's the part that's giving me fits...
Awe man, you can't hardly guess a mid coat. We did a custom candy rootbeer brown. Chrysler B5 blue base with HOK tangerine orange candy mid coat
What year and make is the motorcycle and what is the color called? There are people who provide lacquer color for vintage motorcycles.
Someone with old books should be able to look it up and tell you what the mid coat was, even if they can't mix it for you.
60s Triumph by chance? From what I have heard, the only way is to find some original colour on it somewhere, and try to match it. I am working on a '70 T100C right now, I VERY carefully cleaned a few coats of old paint off with 1000/1200/1500 till I got down to the original purple, am having that matched. The formulas that are floating around came after the fact, triumph never kept records of that info.
If only that were true.... The color is 'Macho Maroon' and was the OEM color on the '78 Yamaha XS11. Yes, there are companies that can duplicate most factory colors, but for some reason this isn't one of them.
Well, there's paint, And There's ways . So how bad do you want it? Its not impossible or unobtainyum. Maybe there's a supplier that does have it here in the states. Chances are It's the exact same paint formula and color that's on something else With a different name.
