Just wondering if anybody else out there is having issues with their Mooneyes metalflake 15" steering wheels?

I have one I bought in September, which makes it about 9 months old as of this typing. It's a silver 'flake 15", with the round holes in the spokes. About a month ago, I got in my Thunderbird & noticed what looked like a grease spot on the thigh of my jeans that wasn't there before. As it turns out, the 'wheel is literally "oozing" brown/blackish goo from where the spokes meet the rim. And the silver wheel is now more of a brownish coppery color.

I paid decent money for this thing. My car is rarely out in the sun unless I'm driving it or at a show. Yeah, it's South Texas & hot, but it ain't really got hot yet.

Just looking to see if I'm the only one having problems, before I contact Moon or So-Cal.

    Nope, like I said:
I plan to contact So-Cal this coming week, as that's who I bought it from. This thread was just to see if it was a common problem amongst the HAMB members.

Well, after putting it off way too long, I finally sent an email to SoCal last night, informing them of my problem & including pictures.

So today my phone rings, & its a # out of Sacramento, CA. I'm a bit confused, but I answer it expecting a telemarketer or something. Nope, its a lady from SoCal calling to let me know that Moon is sending me a new steering wheel and has prepaid the return postage for me to send my deteriorated 'wheel back. They've not seen one do this before, & are immediately making it right for me.

How cool is that? Top notch people at SoCal & Moon.

Nope, not sure why it did that. I imagine they'll inspect it when its returned & try to figure out what happened. Probably just a fluke, & my luck at getting said fluke.... o_O

The bad news is they are replacing a Chinese steering wheel with another Chinese wheel.

A friend bought one and in less than a year it faded from red to pink. His car is garage kept and rarely sits out in the sun. Needless to say he is not thrilled with having a pink steering wheel in his hot rod.

I've had shitty Chinese Craftsman tool handles do the same thing. They turn to gum and get soft and sticky. More than likely a chemical reaction in the rubber. GO WITH MOON! as they say. Good on 'em.

  19. I've got a red flake one in my avatar, been there going on two years and still looks great.....

My old black Superior 500 steering wheels haven't done this. Huh.

Hope the new one lasts a while!

hmm yeah metoo. mine's fairly old, 2010? metalflake green. the first thing it did was get excessively sticky, like you had greasy hands from working on the car (of course *I* would never do that) only much worse. and even with clean hands. i'd clean it and a couple hours later, sticky again. then the chrome started pitting and then rusting.

i finally retired it, hung on the wall until a month ago when i decided i needed it again, and i sure as s**t wasn't gonna buy another one. pic here is right after cleaning (dish soap and, oddly enough, fine bronze wool worked great and no abrasion).

but i will contact Mooneyes, and even though it's old enough they won't replace it, i'll see if this is still an issue, etc.

    yeah, crap plastic.

  28. In truth is it another example of an American supplier going to a manufacturer in China and demanding the cheapest product possible. There are companies in China (and just about anywhere) that can make high quality products but they come with a price, just as they do here. A quality product takes good drawings, specifications and inspection of the final product. These cost money. If we keep returning the junk, complaining and posting on the internet hopefully the problem will get resolved.

Had a white one. Was sticky out of the box and never got better. Tried washing it with different stuff but nothing worked. Chrome was extremely thin and started pitting in tiny spots almost immediately. Not impressed with their stuff at all.
