Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jalopnik. dr, Aug 15, 2015.

  1. Anyone out there built or have pictures of diy V8 based slant 4's?
Midget sprint, Drag, or goofy, no factory stuff "(mopar a4, bmw, pontiac trophy 4,)"
Ps i hope tech is the right place for this?

It all started when HISSO V8's got cut in half in the 1920's. Google Half a HISSO for more photos & info. Bob

If you think about it almost any V-8 engine could be converted to a V-4 by just removing a few parts and plugging some oil holes.

Joe Fontana makes half Chevy, Ford, and Dodge engines for Midget racers or what ever right now for you. Go to a Midget race and see all kinds of cool bangers. Also, don't forget. Besides Pontiac, International Harvester made a half 392 V8 for the Scout.

The approx '69-72 Saab fours were half the Triumph Stag V8, but either version was all junk.

I didn't think of it, but. The Lotus 907 is half of a Lotus something V8. I had a 907 in my roadster for a while. It was a cool motor but not traditional. Maybe Jack will cut a Stude or Packard in half and make a slant 4

If you want to do this the hard part might be making a 180 degree crankshaft. V8s all use a 90 degree crank which won't fire even in a 4.

I like the idea of adapting a Chev V8 head onto a Chev 4 cylinder. Or the larger Mercruiser version of the same engine.

  13. Yes there is a lot of cool factory built slant /4's based on V8's this thread is for
fanken 4's lol grass root style .
I agree with you Rusty O' Toole the 180* crank wold be the hard part mopar sells the a4 crank but will it fit a half cut V8

The Lotus 907 engine is a Jensen Healey engine.
It is an aluminium block version of the slant 4 Vauxhall 2000 and 2300 engine found in Bedford vans but with a twin cam head conversion

The Alloy block Twin Cam version did find its way into Vauxhall Chevette HS2300 for rallying

Learned something from the H.A.M.B. again today!

    Didn't know that IH made 1/2 V-8, 4-bangers!

    Thanks for the info..

  16. Ok this is not the stuff this thread about
I just read a thread about cutting a car up with axes chisels and hack saws
So who has built a engine in a similar fashion ok maybe not with an axe or chisel
Although i here a good sharp estwing wonders on stubborn gaskets lol

Rich, how about the small block Monza at Bonneville that runs on one side and has a flathead aluminum head bolted on the other side

You don't need a flat crank or custom cam. There are hundreds of Smith air compressors using one V8 bank as engine, the other as compressor.

They still have 8 pistons to keep balance.

In the gas crisis seventies some guys converted V8s to 4 cylinders by removing the exhaust valves and the intake valve pushrods. They ran on 4 but still had 8 pistons and rods. Worked ok, with half power. Don't know how much gas they saved.

  21. If use a V8 crank and remove connrods wont the remaining connrods slide side to side
    Because of exes room

  22. This sound promising

  23. Ya midget guy's did that to but for packaging reasons I'm looking for home built slant /4's
Im surprised nobody posted a crosley CoBra engine it is closer to what i was looking for then a sesco or a lotus 907 lol

One of Russ Eyres toys. It looks really good from either side, until you take a very good look.

It does have a Vauxhall crank. I don't know what other Vauxhall parts are in there. I have not seen any. But I would not know a Vauxhall part if you were throwing them at me. The 908 would have been the V8 version of the 907. But I guess, beyond prototypes it never went into production

Love that half Hisso. Haven't seen one of those since I was a kid in the 50's.

Engines that I have seen modified in this way, have bob weights clamped to the crank. They take up the space and weight of the missing parts as well as close off the otherwise open oil hole.

Vauxhall parts are easy to recognize. They are normally kept outside in a 55 gallon drum waiting for the scrappy to buy them

  29. Ya they are beautiful but not really a chopped up v8 since it uses jugs or pots like a vw but dose anyone know how they solved the crankshaft issue?

    Here you go,
Home built slant 4's are very common with modern thin wall 302 Fords

Easy for the DIYer [ just rev it over 8000 and give it a 250 shot ]
