So I finally did it. I got a classic car to work on. This my first classic so be gentile with me. The plan is very mild custom.
And as I said the key is low budget. I don't have a fancy shop or tons of tools and most importantly not much money to spend. I love this forum and wanted to share. So here goes.

I decided to do away with the trunk lock. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1439650469.840255.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1439650490.470076.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1439650516.198118.jpg
Only my second go at welding.

My solution to pop the trunk was a choke cable attached to the lock mechanism.

Lookin good! Keep up the good work, I would toss the headlight covers since they are in bad shape and SOS pad and water the rest of the chrome on the grille, those bumpers may clean up too if you can get the paint off of em.

  9. Looks good. You're on the way now...

Exactly where does the knob end of your trunk cable attach? Couldn't tell from the pic...
    What color you going with?
    Keep us posted.

It looks like you're starting with someone else's old castoff custom. I like it already. Wild color. ALMOST sorry to see it go! Are those Caddy headlight rims? Hold on to those aftermarket three-blade flippers! [I've got only three. LOL.] Original 216? If interested, check out the 216 Forum linked in my signature.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'll try to cover everything. Color will be a deep blue almost black, I believe they are caddi light bezels, the trunk popper is on the rear tray (easily reachable being a 4 door). No direction yet on the chrome. Thanks again

Welding in the grille surround would go a long way. [IMG]

I'm liking the look of it so far. Keep going. There is a great Homemade Tools thread on here too. You'll be able to pick up a lot of really good ideas on there to save some cash on tools.

Not a big update but my middle boy wanted to work on the car this weekend. Who am I to argue with that.
