I remember my mom's Kirby also had a sprayer attachment. I don't think it ever got used, though.

I had a Rainbow i used only for "painting"...usually my winter beaters but I also painted [tinted primer] several daily driver proje cts. I have a big spruce tree adjacent to my driveway [yeah, I painted in the driveway] that almost died one year after it ingested paint. It took a few months for the paint to wear off the concrete. We have a new driveway now and Mrs Rocky would be very upset if I got paint on it.

I remember my day spraying his 52 Ford Courier on the gravel driveway with a vacuum cleaner but don't know what kind it was,,this was in the early 60's. HRP

OK, now this is news to me. Is someone attempting to apply traction to one of my lower extremities, or is this for real? If it's for real I want to know more, and more importantly, see more. Post the pic! I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

It's a leetle too new.. This "paint" is left over Omaha orange enamel mixed with left over gray primer.Mixed it up and blew it on with my trusty Rainbow Entire paint job took about 20 minutes. Those things were fast! Most of the time was spent on filling that quart jar with paint.

  13. Yeah! I remember!
As a kid, back in the day, I painted a 40 Ford coupe with my friends moms vacuum cleaner (don't remember the brand).

Alas, it was only a plastic model.

Did it in his ba*****t. Turned out OK. Still have it...

Seriously, this is the first I've heard of this, and I'm almost 64. OK, so I Googled it, and saw a couple of YouTube videos, and I guess it's for real. I'm pretty sure my wife would kill me if I messed with her vacuum, and my shop vac's brand new. The "attachment" is sold on Amazon.Com for the "paint gun". I guess that's what they use at Maaco! Let's see, volatile gases, backing up the hose when the vacuum is off, then the vacuum turned on, and the electric motor "sparks"................................oh yeah, this is gonna be interesting. No need for a tin hat, I'm not trying it! But don't let that stop you. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

In 1960 my almost 70 year old neighbor lady had her 49 Plymouth painted in her driveway. I was fascinated with anything to do with cars so went over to bug the guy doing it. he masked it with newspaper and used a lay down not an up right vacuum cleaner to spray the paint. Now I seem to remember he charged her $15 to do the whole job. He was done within an hour start to finish. And as an eight year old I thought the paint job looked like ****. Dang

Huh! So, there was a time when Maaco went door to door? The YouTube videos seemed to be more around the house painting, such as shutters, not cars. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Had a neighbor who bought a Kirby in the 60's. He said it was like 5 dollars down and 5 dollars a month for life. He had every attachment known to man, including a meat grinder. It must have been the Swiss Army knife of vacuum cleaners.

Painted several model cars and a Clinton (remember them?) 3hp. powered bicycle with my mothers lay down electrolux. Practiced first on several house and barn doors. Later used the same vac for supplied air to a surplus mask for shooting the dreaded original Imron paint.. Supplied for free from my uncle the DuPont man.

My mother bought a new electrolux in the '70s and it came with the paint jar, but we, in our teenage wisdom, decided that there was no way it would work out well, so never tried it !

On one Amos and Andy episode they painted a car in the alley with Safire's vacuum. If I remember correctly the car was used in a robbery and the cop leaned up against it while it was wet.

I don't remember the outcome. Amos and Andy have been off the air for 50 years now.

Off topic but something I've long wondered about: Yeas ago when my folks would bring me to Montgomery Wards there was often a vacuum cleaner on display with the hose hooked to the outlet and pointing straight upward, and a beach ball spinning in the air a couple of feet above the hose. Anyone remember that? It would bob up and down but never fall to the ground. I suppose it had some kind of tether, I was too young to figure it out.

    Loved that show.

  28. The exhaust port is hooked up to the hose and hose to the gun. So if the vacuum cleaner gets any fumes it's just what's in the ambient air in the vicinity.
Ever use your shop vac as a blower?

The new hvlp turbine painting systems work under the exact same principal.

Now of course they've got it more compact and built a neat case around the motor and fan that doesn't look like a vac cleaner and doesn't have a debris containment system. Ever strip down a vacuum cleaner and separate the motor?

    Pervert! :D

When I was working at Sears & Roebuck as a teenager they always had a vacuum cleaner blowing a beach ball and it always attracted attention to that department, that ball was not attached to anything and spun & bounced from the time the store opened until closing, even when Sears had their Moonlight Madness sales.
