welcome to the low altitudes .... from 4400 to 700 ft might want to check that jetting too . this is how my buddy burned up his O/t camaro when he brought it home from Wyoming . jumped on it and holed a piston . his was a procharger equipped car .

the engine would get the open container ticket , but it has a lower alcohol content than whats in the tank ... 4.5% vs 10%[/QUOTE]

I've raced the car in good air before.

  5. I think if I was the slower car in a handicapped race I'd purposely flip on the turn signal toward the lane the other car was in. He just might hang back a bit if he thought I was seriously going to do a lane change in front of him...

That's SO funny! After I posted that, I thought more or less the same thing, started wondering if you were being chased by a quicker car, if flipping the turn signal on at the 1000' mark would maybe affect his concentration as he was closing on you!

  7. Hell, if it was ME in the other lane I'd probably be just dumb enough to lift for a split second!

I almost got thrown out of a track for honking my horn at the start line while staging , I proved my car was more streetable that the "Racecar " that was next too me . the guy flipped out , I was suprised he could hear it over the open headers . still messed up his concentration when the line fell , you want to play games staging , I am more than happy to play back .

    we're there!

Drove all day and got to St Louis late afternoon. Swapped the gears and changed the oil, and the headlight. The old Jones motrola tach has been acting up, found a guy who offered to let me borrow an electronic one, so we'll mess with that in the morning. Tech starts at 8 am, will probably take all day.

fun fun fun! been catching up with all my friends here.

also I did the "tuning" to adjust for the elevation change. I live at 4500 ft, so I had to open up the idle mixture screws about a quarter turn to get it to run good here. that's it.

THis year, there is an award for fastest car with a sealed hood, so we might see if we can make it all week without opening the hood. The car used less than a quart of oil driving up here, 1470 miles . We averaged 11 mpg on the drive, which I think is acceptable. I've gotten a little better in my 55, but it has vacuum advance on the distributor.

On the other hand... If I was the faster car, I'd lay down on the horn when the guy's second yellow came on. He'd be goin' red big time.

  19. Jim. I think the fact that the engine only used a quart of oil, and put down 10-11 mpg is pretty impressive ! Our old race cars a not exactly aerodynamic . Nice going. Keep us posted .

Just found your thread and subscribed. Its real cool that you drove all the way there instead of trailering. Not a lot of people have the faith in their vehicle (or themselves) to make such a road trip.
My avatar, equipped with fresh .030 over 1970 429 with a .509 lift cam, toploader 4 speed and 3.73s went coast to coast twice in the mid-late '90s, first by myself, then second with my girlfriend (now wife). We still talk about how much fun it was, the few minor issues I had to fix, the "road bug beard" etc. People told me I was nuts but so what. The memories are forever.
I'll be following your thread from here on out, post some video of your runs!

    Thanks!

Made it thru tech and registration. Horn quit working so we had to fix it in line. Steve with the blown hemi coupes brought me some parts to fix a little oil leak, thanks. Ready to make a run tomorrow.

do what my buddy did , uhaul and a he went and bought a used pick up tuck ... as his trip from Indy to tuscon was quoted at 3's and ha got the truck for 1500

or in his case since hes self employed , we find him a 305/ 350 and drop it in to get him home and put the saveable parts in the back .
