What a great trip! There's a couple nice sections of the old highway from LeGrand Iowa to Belle Plaine Iowa. In my town of Tama on that route, the Lincoln Highway Bridge makes for a nice picture. The old bowling alley is closed and the motel's a dive, but the original King Tower Cafe near the bridge is still open and not too bad. The Lincoln Cafe in Belle Plaine would be a better choice for a meal.

Thanks for the heads up Gastrap.
Todays destination is Kimbal Ne. Lots of the old highway in Nebraska, I've passed through the North Plat area before, once in 66 and in 86, got a ticket both times so I'll be on my best behavior this time and hope the state trooper that got me is enjoying his retirement.

Did most of 66 that one could drive on the way back from the 1st R&C Americruise in a Hiboy 34 3W.
Had a lot of fun seeing "The Mother Road". Send a shout out when your cruising through the San Gabriel Valley, Maybe we could meet up @ Sonic in Duarte off of Rte 66 or better yet Tommy's for Chili Burgers :). Hope that you're having a great ride!!!!

Connected with a couple of long stretches of the old Lincoln Highway yesterday and today. The interstate moves right along but there's nothing like the back roads for a relaxing drive.

Even found some traces of the original dirt road that went from Time Square NY. to Lincoln park in Frisco.

Following along on this great journey. For us younger guys, I'd love to hear about your reminisces from the 1966 trip and how things have changed. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

Yall have fun Mike, sorry the Caddy wasn't up to the task, but there'll be another trip to another bucket list spot. Always loved the '57 Cad, Dagmar couldn't outdo one, that's for damn sure!

I suggest get off at i40 exit 139 West of Ash Fork az. then enjoy 66 all the way thru Kingman and continue on old66 thru oatman and rejoin i40 at topock just before the Colorado river and California.

Good luck. Great looking Caddy. But no matter what you drive, it should be enjoyable. There's so much to see in the USA I never could see why our kids and others need to go anyplace else.

  14. There is so much to see. We had three and a half weeks and there was still so much to see.

As far as why others (like me) go anyplace else as well............ I think it's only one thing. "All inclusive" :)

That's what our kids say. They go places like Mexico and islands where the rooms, food, drink, and intertainment are all one price. Usually very reasonable. I don't blame them in doing it while they can.
I was born and raised 50 miles from Bloomington, Illinois so we traveled old Rt 66 a lot and there are still lots of sections with original buildings along the route. The oldest truck stop in America the Dixie Truck stop has changed but is still open and Lincoln still has some old buildings thru town. I think Pontiac has the Log Cabin Restaurant and Springfield some old diners.
Even now that we live in Florida we enjoy driving the older back roads and checking out old gas stations, shops, etc.

I was a young man in the Army at the time heading off TDY for Aberdeen Proving Grounds Md. At the time I 80 didn't exist and us 30 was the trans continental high way. I had bought a 1965 Ranchero new and made the trip, I only had 4 days to get to my temporary duty station and this was my first long road trip . It also was the start of my love for road trips. I so enjoyed the trip that over the next 49 years I thought of what I got a glimpse of and wanted to go back and take a good look at every thing. I'm retired now and have been planning a Rt. 66 trip for a few years and decided to try to re-trace that early trip back to the traditional start point. Yesterday I was able to get off the interstate and on to a long stretch of 30, now named the Lincoln Highway by the people of Nebraska and most every thing is still as I remember here, no tourist traps, just a relaxing drive on a two lane road that goes through a small town every 20 miles or so. I'll post todays pictures in a while but here's what the road looked like out the windshield today.

There is so much of this stuff in the small towns that it all can't be photographed and posted, but here are a few of them.
There was a big old cat sitting on the hood of the falcon soaking up the AM sun.

And some more stuff. We also toured some rail road history sites in North Platte. This stretch of 30 is a drive worth taking.

    Hey Mike,

Great try with the Caddy. It'll be more enjoyable in the daily driver anyway! If you like planes, the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA is a great stop. Most of them are actually flown. Not too far off Route 66 (maybe 20 mins). Also, LA County fair is going on currently if that's your type of thing (close to Route 66 as well).

Development has stripped a bunch of historic Route 66 out by Rancho Cucamonga, but you still find a few little landmarks here and there. Look forward to seeing more on your travels...

We just stopped in Grand Island Nebraska for the night so it will be a couple or three weeks before we get out to Ca. Still on the Lincoln Highway. Thanks for the tips, we like all kinds of machinery.
Stopped at a car collection I remember seeing out in a corn field back in 66, it's now huge and in the Cabello's complex east of Kearney Ne. Good thing digital cameras don't run out of film, I was like a blind dog in a meat packing plant. I'll post a mess of pictures after supper tonight.

Back in 1966 I saw a building surrounded by a corn field on 3 side that had some cars in it by the same name and thought, what a strange place to keep old cars. We were pulling out of Kearney when Becky pointed out the classic car collection at the end of A big Cabello's store so I turned around and went back. To my surprise the place was huge and packed with cars, some of which I had only heard of but never seen in other than pictures.

Lots of nice stuff here; and some great displays!
When you get to your home-stretch, don't forget the Western Aero & Auto
Museum (WAAAM) in Hood River (where I volunteer). Also a bunch of original
survivors that still fly and drive. (Unfortunately, the lighting is also poor (dark)
for basic cameras. You will need a strong flash or trip-pod to get decent pics.)
