    You got this right, Dennis!!
Its not "just" the money...we have to trust the guy we often don't even know and who is thousands of miles away that he or she does not just keeps the money and ships a car over, that is more or less like the description was... Not talking of the people who load those containers without giving a shit what happens to the goods inside!! And then our dmv regulations, that are so hard to get those hot rods registered... BUT when you have the licence plate on the car after lets say after 3-6 months time: prizeless!!!

I'm way too sintimental & associate all the cars I've let go with memories of fun times. But it grieved me more to have too many & let them sit & go down hill "even though they were in a nice comfy heated shop", pick the ones close to your heart , drive them regularly & when the time is right let them go. I'd rather see my stuff being used rather than sitting in somebody's garage collecting dust & needing fuel pumps, carb kits, wheel cylinders, water pumps, tanks dropped & cleaned from me being a hoarder type. I felt it sad at first knowing our 57 chevy went to Sweden but they're some die hard enthusiasts over there that I'm sure enjoying seeing the old gal out & about. The five generation 53 we have means much more to us even if it's a moor door & it & our 55 chevy will be in better shape for the kids someday. There's an episode or 2 on "fox" business if a show called strange inheritances involving a couple of can't take it with you car hoards that should be seen. One thought of himself as s car saver. Out of over three thousand cars he had mostly classic he'd only let go of 3. That sounds a way better than hoarder! I'd sure buy back a couple of my older cars though if the opportunity presented itself! Loving old cars as one friend put it ...."is a horrible affliction"! Flux

I only sold 4 cars, of my own, and they financed something else that I like even more. Don't regret a single sell!
But I also lost money on almost anything I don't care for, to get the things I really want. I do regret that.

  5. I know of a couple of my old cars that ended u parted out and crushed. I heard when I first joined the HAMB that someone had spotted my first race car in a field not far from where I sold it.

A few of my most recent projects went to HAMBers, one of them a sectioned and channeled '53 Effie ended up becoming a mud truck, the chassis ended up under a '58 Corvette. I guess its OK, I wasn't as much in love with the truck as I was the build. ;) I could take you to the Pusher today, it is becoming a 4WD with the right old 4WD stuff that sears once sold as a kit (before these trucks could be had 4WD from the factory). I may get the "job" of going through the transmission and transfer case.

I know pretty close to where my old '46 Coupe is located. The lady that owns it is still married to one of my brothers and she always drove it more then I did anyway. She still tells everyone that it is my car and I am just letting her use it. I think that she is secretly in love with me, or the old car. ;)

Most of them are just old cars to me. I play with them up to a point that I have had as much fun with them as I want to then they just need to go play cars with someone else.

Abut 20 years ago, I built the car of my dreams, a '36 3-window with '39 brakes, 4.11 gears, '39 transmission and a 276" '50 Merc. Drove the car for 6 or 7 years and grew to dislike it because it was very cramped inside, and the drive train was too "delicate" for the engine, which ran very well. A guy in our town made me an offer that I couldn't refuse so down the road it went. I think about it once in a while (usually when I see a thread about '36' Fords), but I don' miss it. I hear he more than doubled his money by selling it to someone in New Zealand. So if any of you Kiwi's have a Vineyard Green '36 3-window with an 8BA and a very patched up floor that you got from the USA about 10 years ago, and want to know more about it, PM me. So I guess I still have some interest in the thing, but I don't want it back. Ever since owning that car, I have a different slant on 3-window coupes, which I used to lust after.

This is odd ... 22 years or so ago I sold the '56 Plymouth wagon in the HAMB classifieds to a guy in Blackfoot, Idaho. It's for sale in Florida, exactly the same down to the primer under the RF fender mldg. It's 10 times more $$ now ...

I found my old 77 Chevy in pick n pull, stripped of all the good pieces, my 59 Edsel in a guys picture albums here on the Hamb, 2 of my Henry J's on e bay, due to unpaid storage fees. I bought one back and parted it out, like I should have done originally. have no clue what happened to any of the others, except my 66 c10, my first truck, which got caught in a bitter divorce, and crushed out of spite.

My first old car was when I was in the Army. 1936 Packard 120 4 door. No rust, just a million pieces. Paid 100.00, put it together, sold it for 800.00. Bought 1029 A sedan in a barn. Drove it for 2 years before selling it, and the list goes on. You just can't keep them all.

Yet another pleasant surprise and "discovery" of sorts. Some years ago I drug a '30 Ford coupe out of a Northern Cali garage. It was fairly complete, but completely disassembled. The body was in what we western guys would consider fair shape with only minor rust in the usual places along the bottom, a bit of subrail damage/deterioration, and a funky screwed on tin top filler. I got rid of most of the stock parts, mounted the body to a '32 style chassis as pictured below. As will sometimes happen, plans change and the shuffle begins. I ended up parting with the rolling chassis in a trade deal that netted me a nice, road worthy '41 Ford pickup, and sold the body to Eric Black (a fine artist) in Portland. He got started on a full fendered version of the car, but similar to my situation, he got a different opportunity that prompted the sale of the body to Bob Hilton and company. A couple weeks back Eric emails me a picture of the fabulous outcome from Mr. Hilton's efforts. Finally that ol' A got just treatment............... Here's a picture of it as it stands today that Mr. Davison captured at last weekend's LSRU. 045a.jpg eventual outcome.jpg

I love my wife kids & grandkids. Cars are just stuff & things that I like. I have some family I like less than cars.

To the OP. Nice car that went to Japan. What really got me was the size of the car show, and the high quality of all the cars in the back ground. I didn't realise that hot rodding was such a big thing there. I've never sold a rod so can't comment on original question. Every time I talk about selling one, my wife talks me out of it, but one day they will both go no doubt.

Biggest regret was a 56 Sunliner I traded in for a newer Merc. Saw the next owner beating the crap out of it when leaving the bars and then sold it to some guys who tried to make a stockcar of it. Last seen in a junk yard. But on the plus side, a fellow HAMBer has my former 33 Ford hotrod truck that I started in '65. [Sold it in '98.] He's got it looking great !!!

There's only one that I miss. It went to someplace in the southeast in about 1981-2. I think Georgia. It was a red 34 Ford pickup, chopped 3 1/2", shortened bed, full fendered with model A coupe rear fenders. White interior, tonneau cover and upholstered running boards. 283 with Duntov cam and 39 transmission. 33 full hood. The thing that sets it apart is the 30's Lasalle bumpers front and rear. I wonder where it is now.

Well.........not all follow up stories are happy ones. Last week I got an email from the good guy who bought my '36 3w a couple years ago. Seems the battery decided to become a suicide bomber and took the coupe and a truck he had with it.:( fried 36 02a.JPG fried 36 03a.JPG

I'd much rather have "sellers remorse" then "buyers remorse".

I would be lying if I said I didn't miss any of the hot rods I have built and sold but I have to be realistic,I can't afford to keep them all and I always want to build another car and that is the only way to finance the next project. HRP

I have sold more cars than I thought I'd ever have. (buying and selling since '55)
Later on down the post, I'll try for a list...but with the stories, I'll probably have to buy 2 more Alliance memberships to cover bandwidth!

Very first car I owned was a 1926 T Tudor, so rough that I replaced enough parts to have a 1927 T Touring when I sold it in 1972. It turned up on eBay almost two years ago, guy I'd sold it to did NOTHING to it then passed away. Another guy bought it and sold it off piece by piece, I thought of buying it back, but like my current projects. Good news is a HAMB member owns the body now and will be racing it on the beach next month in TROG. Bob NOVEMBER%202014%20003_zpsh8ouwaff.jpg

I had a bunch of old cars in the 80's, bought and sold not so much to make money, but to have a cool old car and not lose money. I never saw any of those after I sold them. I bought my 1961 Dodge around 1989 to drive and sell, then it turned into my daily driver for 3 years, then realized I'm the only one that likes it and tried and tried to sell it but nobody wanted the ugly thing, so I guess I am stuck with that one.

The only car I regret selling is my Dads '56 Buick Special. And I only regret selling it because it would have been a great family cruiser. Sense I didn't plan on having four kids ( 1 yr old triplets) I cant be too hard on myself but the car went to a great home and I still service the car. As for my '32s, I don't miss my Vicky, but the five window is still pretty fresh so it stings a lil. Not too bad as I made a healthy profit on it. Good news is I fly out to Denver to pick up my new deuce in a week!!!!

You have a vision in your head, you build it, then one day you sell it. I never want to see again the ones I've parted with, I'm liable to break down in tears when I see what the next owner does with it.

  28. I don't know what motivates others to sell their cars, but in my case it is because where is something I don't like about it. If I really liked it, I wouldn't part with it. Kind of like women, if something about one bugs me, she's gone, no regrets.

I'd love to find my '57 Bel Air that I sold in 2002. That was a great car and I had a lot of fun in it. Would be great to have that one back.

I sold an awesome '67 C/10 with a built 355 in it that the kid wrapped around a pole a couple weeks after buying it. Oh well.

Some I miss and some I don't. The hardest one to part with was my 57 Fuel Injected BelAir that left here a few months ago--had it on and off since 77. Still have our 55 BelAir bought the same yr--it will not be leaving while Im still upright.
Intend to keep the 40 dlx too til I can't drive any more.
