The GM "Service Package" iron angle plug head pn 3965742 was available mid/late 70 IIRC.
Is this the one you used in 75 or had an updated version come out?
IIRC they were refered to as 292 "turbo" heads.

Dave...this may be a couple of years OT but here goes.
Things really started changing around 1969-1971, prior to the above mentioned heads; the
1969 Z28 production (186's IIRC) iron heads are what was being used and seriously modified.
All the professional racers with GM connections got first shot at these probably early/late 68.
No sure this directly answers your original question, but there ya go.

  2. I think it does. Seems like an aluminum head engine would NOT be period correct. Not that my Pump Gasser will be period perfect but I am considering an iron headed small block as a way to stay in line. Plenty of power for my use can still be found in a good iron head. Sure it is a bit heavier.

My old pal 'Nooner' (passed in 2000) daily street drove a white '55 Chev with tube front axle, 454, Muncie, 4.11 rear, Moon tank up front: 2.5 gal. of Sauvignon Blanc got distributed via a Cragar hand pressure pump, was usually gone in 60 minutes!
    True story...

    Dave...
This is probably not news to you, but I should add that the "period correct" heads in the mid 60's would be the "camel hump" 2.02's, and the lower hp 1.94's generally, these were the 461's and 462's.
I have a pair of NOS "291's" that I acquired many years ago, these are considered the transition head and were for 1968 production only, these are the last head castings that still looked like the old "fueler heads" prior to the later issue "accessory" bolt heads.

The angle plug heads were the thing and Jerry Brady had a ton of brass put in the ex port

On the flow bench they wanted a big hump in the exhaust port floor with a D shaped outlet, and did that ever wake them up

Then they would angle mill the surface from zero on the intake side to .100 off on the plug side, and it took about 10 c.c.s out of the chamber so you could run a lower dome for better flame travel

It was a lot of work to trick up a set of heads but well worth the time & money, if you needed a few ponys to be at the top of your class

Been busy working 6 \ 10's. Still occasionally getting work in the garage. Unfortunately it is redoing previous work. Hope to have more updates soon.

    Hey CG

Thought you just retired and were going to play for a while before getting back into the daily grind

What kind of a gig did you turn up?

  10. OK Don,...don't know when I'll get started but I've decided to bring this 38 (it has a 37 nose on it but I'll be using a 38 front)back to life after a 40 year nap. It's an old drag car that raced at Rockford dragway in Byron, Illinois years ago, have no other history on it other than it slept in this machine shed for the last 40 years;...just gathering parts at present;...have to finish my current project first, but mite get going on this by mid Winter. ..it'll be a gasser style car.

Alright Rusty it looks pretty clean, looking forward to seeing what kind of look you come up with

It takes me back a few decade's to when I was building mine up, mine was lost too for 25 yrs and just 10 miles away then it was bought and kind of restored because he made a lot of changes

But at least it was saved and that is the up-side

  14. My 39 Hudson is about a week away from being in the garage which has been occupied for months by house projects.
That doesn't mean I have been idle. Working to determine what issues I will have sliding the SBC in there. Going to need a short water pump for sure.

Dave that water pump looks like it fits ok, are you going to run one of those electric fans or the stock one

  18. Not thinking electric. Were there electric fans back in the day? Was thinking 4 blade, obviously have a top to bottom centering issue at this time.

Rusty that 38' looks pretty cool , but maybe a bit too much white as in the frame and tires

You know my car was a 38' when I bought it but liked the 37' grille better, and a shop close by had a brand new grille - trim strips and center section so I had a 37' in a few days

Can you cut out that curved sheet metal panel for more room that's right in front of the pump ?

I have seen them on a number of cars recently, I have a hunch someone might be making them new, or at least, that's what I am attempting to find out. They were on some guys Henry J on here a while back as well, and I have seen them on a couple other cars.

Rusty that one is very clean maybe some large cheater slicks on wider mags, with the fenders cut and rolled under and you would have the correct look

First time I have seen louvers on a 37' hood , kind of different looking

Wonder what color it is going to be ? plus chrome window frames so he is on the right track

Thanks Langy, well, not the answer I was hoping for, but, hey, You cant always get what you want...:D

  30. The car as shown is sitting in a small barn out back with a foam small block and a gutted trans shell. This allowed me to tinker and design for months while I other things were occupying the garage. Obviously there is a downside to that, minimal industrial work, jacking etc.

The trans is sitting on a stock Hudson cross member limiting the height and depth changes until it gets indoors next weekend. The engine will set back an inch or more without cutting the firewall. After that slight firewall mods will be needed to get it where its needed.

As for the curved tray in the nose, a cross member below it wont allow any gain in that area. I have 18 x 22 opening for radiator in shell and I have found off the shelf solutions.
