Ryan, is this why I find myself using the phrase "Don't tell Grandma" a lot when my grandson and I are in the hot rod?

I'm kinda in Ryan's camp on this one, but it's hard because the asshammer could have easily killed someone's kiddo. The street in front of my high school didn't have speed bumps before I went there... by my senior year there were four of them out front. They were earned with similar antics. The regulars still refer to them as the "Robertson" speedbumps 30 years later. Unfortunately, I haven't changed all that much, other than I have a few bumps and bruises and "experiences" to temper my colorful judgements in those moments where I might be tempted to spin up my Gasser in a building full of spectators. Hell, it's a Gasser! Why else do you own the damned thing except to wow a crowd?

I'm sure the guy feels extra horrible about the whole deal and wishes his clock could be ran backwards. I know I would.

Somebody mentioned "with kids around". Its funny, I drop my kid off at her school sometimes in my "outlaw street racer":D rump rump ride. I wish I could tell you the number of times some "respectable" soccer mom in an SUV has attempted to PASS me, as I am doing the posted 25mph speed limit on the narrow street directly in front of her school, with hoards of kids passing between the parked cars on the sides of the street. Some people have no foresight whatsoever. Last year, I verbally chewed some clown out for SPEEDING THROUGH THE FUCKING PARKING LOT as school was getting out, in a total POS 20 yr old Crown Vic.
I told him even if he didn't give a shit about his own kid, he'd better goddam well give a shit about mine...

Atwater Mike said it all in the last line of his post. I have urges to do something stupid all the time. I at least give a good 360, and ask myself if I am gonna have space to deal with consequences before I do.

  6. I have one on the boat, and two on some other vehicles. All within an elbow length. Theft kill primarily. For the boat, it was an anti kidcampbell kill once. I had some water drag to help slow me down too.

Practice the effects of happenstance at all times. I've had steering columns lock at speed, AND throttle sticks. Those occasions were in areas where I had tons of room to navigate ... and none around me, thankfully.

Preparedness is key to ultimate survival. Run scenarios through your head. Brakes, throttle, steering. It can happen/it will happen. Whatcha' gonna' do if ? Coach yourself up, have your exit plans. Had mine. I'm better than no one. Just ready then most .... maybe. My share of fortunate "Doh !" moments was a teacher.

That's enough guff' from this guy. Happy happy everyone ! Be safe, safer, safest. Horsepower is your determinant.

We should get in a big argument over this. I could call someone a cocksucker cuz their opinion is different than mine... and then, someone could call me a Nazi for over editorializing... and then we could just go from there and see where it takes us! What do you fellas say?

    :)

I have to wonder about the driver going to the hospital...front axle was bent some, and pass. wheel turned out (bent tie rod) Obviously, didn't have his 5 or 6 point belt fastened.

But looking at the dislocated front sheet metal of the '55, (probably a tilt front) there is some real damage incurred.

So, did the driver go to the hospital from banging his face on the steering wheel...or did the '55 owner apply some 'physical damage'?

Excuses don't cut it. "gee, that could be me"......isn't a reason to let the other guy off the hook, it's a reason to clean up your own act.

It all fun and games until somebody gets hurt............that 'somebody' could be you or a loved one....bet your attitude about it would be different then.

Ryan...Far as that calling somebody 'C-Sckr', here in California with all our new laws that could be taken as a 'marriage proposal'!

I'm guessing he banged his head... Note blood stain on driver's side door.

Of course it would... And I know this... That's why I kicked the guy out of the HAMB drags a couple of years ago (see previous post)...

  12. I'm with Ryan on this one. When a gasser rolls through like this, it's kinda expected (from the crowd) to blip the throttle. It's not like he was giving everyone a smoke show (I'm just going by the original poster). Although I am surprised it didn't have a kill switch inside the vehicle.

I just read a story on facebook today about another accident at a car show over the weekend. Guy in a new Challenger hellcat was trying to show off, doing like 80mph down a fairground road. Car started fishtailing and when it caught traction, it veered off into the parking lot and then hit a real nice 64 Impala. Impala got some serious damage

  14. I was gonna' say I wish Ryan was national media. The only fair reporter I read ^^^ seemingly . Everyone else .... is exactly what he said. Whole country is chasing their tails these days.

Ryan Cochran for President in 2020. God Bless America. Party affiliation -> HAMB Party.

At the least, let's take over a national media conglomerate please.

I read all your prior posts.........but what has your being a self avowed case of arrested maturity, "bigger dumbass" and a hypocrite have to do with this guy under discussion being excusable for very poor judgment? Or, for that matter, suggesting a name calling fest is the only alternative to intelligent discussion.

Nearly EVERY repressive law, rule, regulation or uninsurable event is the consequence of no, or poor, self control on the part of a minority number of citizens, participants, spectators.........thereafter, the majority pays the price one way or another...........

well there are probably a few members here who have never done anything unsafe in a car. I for one am not one of them. we can all point fingers and say the guy was stupid while the only difference between him and us is that when we were stupid it was not posted on the internet for all to see, or perhaps we missed the 55 Chevrolet parked in our path.

A few week ago at a local car show. Nice 57 at 10am and the same car at 3pm. Rolled it when it lost control leaving the show doing a burn out. Was on its roof 50ft from the entrance of the show. The driver a 72 year old man was ok with only minor scrapes and brushes. Knew he had made a dumb mistake. Destroyed every panel. No one else had any thing damaged nor was anyone else hurt.

A friend of mine did the same thing with his bucket. But he wasn't trying to do a burnout, the throttle just stuck open, or was held open when the power of the engine torqued the frame and caused it to lock-up.
Don't most racing groups, the NSRA, etc. require a good throttle return spring? Gary

Some guys can learn from watching others make mistakes...some guys have to make all the mistakes themselves, to learn.

Have an accident like those above, and, after paying damages, be locked in a Yugo with missing sparking plugs.
Or a Merc 240D on empty, with a full can of petrol as the only fuel.

I have seen a few of these incidents as well at various shows-some resulted in damaged vehicles but fortunately no injuries. Most were due to stuck throttles but many due to no neutral safety switch. A guy around the corner has a Tbucket he bought-one day he was fooling with it and it started in gear-was a powerglide and at idle but stuck him to the wall for a while til neighbor heard him yelling-no neutral switch. Luckily no one was seriously hurt here.

People make mistakes and people pay for them. I'm sure this guy feels like absolute shit about this... I mean, I feel sorry for everyone involved really. The poor guy that cared so much for the front of his '55 that he had a bra on it, must be devastated... and pissed to no end... And the guy in the gasser must feel so, so bad... I'm sure he'd do anything to hit edit > undo.

But ya can't. And I'm not trying to excuse the guy at all. I'm not sure where you got that. I'm just saying that people behind keyboards typing the word "stupid" isn't gonna make the situation any better, the conversation at hand any more interesting, or applied justice any more effective.

The dude is gonna continue to pay for his mistake and the price he pays doesn't differ depending on the reaction of folks on the internet. To think so is a bit narcissistic, right?

Anyway (and speaking only for myself), I live in a glass house. As such, I don't throw stones.

If we were all mature adults we would all drive Prius's, and there would be no Hot Rods. I have worked in a public setting(park) for 25 years, in California no less. I have learned You cannot legislate or cure the human condition. When the public herds together, chaos ensues. This guy was stupid or unfortunate in a car. I have seen similar stupidity in boats, mountain bikes, surfboards, and even on foot. We can control our own destiny, but watch out for the rest. Am I better than the rest. Hell no. I've had my own issues with stupidity and immaturity. Age and life have slowed me down somewhat, but I like horsepower, loud pipes, and offending people still. Sure miss a few of my old rides for those reasons.
