Shouldn't the most asinine failure be that the car builder couldn't design a throttle that wouldn't over-center? We all think we are such good mechanics and engineers, but how come checking the throttle for sticking or over-centering isn't the first thing on the list before firing it up?

Second most asinine failure is that the guy couldn't use his eyes to see that there were people standing around him as he stomped on it.

I certainly hope the guy who caused this mess feels like "absolute shit" about it. And, no, our opinions and recriminations are not going to change his penalty, nor were they expected, or intended, to do so.
And if any one thought these comments would change the penalty, I would describe that as wishful thinking, or optimistic or delusional.........narcissistic doesn't seem apt in this case

But, yes, I do think your posts, and those of a few others, are waaaay too sympathetic to this dude, simply because none of this had to happen.....it was only an "accident" in that it was not the intended outcome of his action.....but that does not make it an unavoidable accident. In fact, very few accidents are unavoidable. And THAT is the point here.

Somebody else (the owner of the '55 Chevy) is bearing the brunt of the fool's actions. That the fool may have to pay for the repairs seems like small consolation when compared with not having the damage at all. And THAT could just as easily have been the case.

I think the guy was a dumb ass, because I know I'm one. And if it wasn't for self control that could have been me!!

But the only thing I won't to hear now is what did the gasser owner do to make good to the 55 owner? And when will the topolini be back on track, where it belongs.

The meds must still be doing you just right @Ryan . I too have paid for my own dumbassedness, in bigger ways than this guy. I don't feel sorry for him, per se, but I understand that people fuck up.

I mostly feel bad for the guy with the '55. Even if it all gets fixed at no charge, he's out the time of not enjoying his car and the knowledge that his car is not "perfect". The history of that damage will probably haunt him.

Think about this the next time you are about to jam the throttle, I say to myself. This may be a good time to check our throttle linkage and return springs.
Has anyone found the kind of shaft return springs (that carbs have) for mechanical injector butterfly shafts??? I have seen too many cars whose return springs broke, or were broken by impact, allowing the butterflys to open, often causing severe havoc.

And the car that went through the lobby that was discussed here a year or so ago, it's throttle stuck as well? A small burp, maybe OK, but full throttle until it goes over center? Yes, I said over center as the only times I have ever seen a stuck throttle was because of that, it could have stuck anywhere along the travel, but over center was probably what happened.

When doing this type stuff or any other dangerous activities that we hoodlums like to do, we should always weigh the (risk/reward) percentages, they are overwhelmingly weighted to the risk side. I am a lot more conservative with each passing year, funny, the longer I live the more I want to stay alive, I still have lots of stuff I want to do. :)

I hear ya..... Thinking back to all the street racing I did in the '70's, I would definately be a first-ballot "dumbass hall of famer".

As an example of this I have seen more than once at the Donut Derelicts car show in Huntington Beach a nice vintage car pull into a standard striped parking slot and park about 4 1/2 inches onto the marked strip, very sloppy but no big deal, right?, up to the point when a non-vintage modern land yacht pulls into the next spot and side swipes the old car ruining a corner panel. 100% avoidable but who's insurance pays?

  17. LOL who takes time to weigh to consequences/dangers? :D If anyone in the world is anything like I am they just ball it up and throw it on, then afterward they say to themselves, "well I certainly could have planned that a little better." :D :D :D

I think that we all have been caught with out pants down at least once or so close that we didn't have time to zip. Its easy to point a finger but I noticed that when I an finger pointing I have 3 pointing back at me.

I am still glad that it is mostly bent cars and not so many bent people.

So what's the verdict? PC and group hug? Buy him a beer? Med's & parole? Time in country jail for what MIGHT have happened? No doughnuts whipped, right? This incident could KILL the hobby. Drive up insurance rates. Cause a negative backlash! ~Freakin-A~Von.

First off , he was asked to unload it and fire it up in the building,. he didnt want to, but was told you dont get the trophie until we see it runs., he never saw the trophie as the second it fired something went way wrong and it went full open. he is laying in the hospital running it over and over in his head, but thankfull nobody was hurt other then himself. the other thing is Jd is a very stand up guy and would be the last one to show off, he doesnt need to show off, he has and is the koolest guy I know.! he is beating himself up over this deal, which could have happend to anyone. but he didnt set out to have this happen and he wasnt showing off, the car has been to many hamb drags as well as other tracks, and trust me the man can drive that car and has kept it on its wheels , sometimes all four are off the ground , but it has never wrecked. lighten up it was an accedent and he feels really bad about it......hell i saw two guys in okc doing dualling burn outs and launches at the lil show they used to have at the bowling alley, right next to my caddy, i was freaking out, but everyone was egging them on and laughing, and I;m pretty sure lots of beer was involved,....it just wasnt their time yet,...

A person driving a hot rod with three pedals could have simply pushed in the clutch. But then there would be the risk of sky high RPM's and flywheel chunks scattering throughout the venue.

Hey, looks like the front axle bent instead of breaking......

  22. Just talked with this fellow at the HAMB drags and he was in our convoy on the way to MOKAN on that rainy Sat. morning of the drags. I would not say he is an idiot as some have pre-concluded already. You know accidents do still happen.

There's always another side... And it usually comes out only after the masses jump to conclusions.

Thanks for adding this. Pretty different story from what was first posted. The shit would have really hit the fan if a by-stander had been hurt.

But just think how cool an exit it would have been if all had gone well! I am sure that is what he was thinking at the time (I can't throw any stones 'cause I would have probably been thinking the same damn thing).
