Cool ... go for it !!
Just remember, if you plan on running it down the track you will need a spec roll bar if you go 13.49
May want to factor that into the design

  5. please do not gasserize this car!

Am I the only one that thinks this would be a good way to go with a '51 Dodge, especially a convert -with a chopped Carson top of course. image.jpeg

  18. This is starting of way wrong. First of all, it's not a roadster! It has roll up windows!!

  19. You can "Just say'n" all you want, but that car wasn't a Gasser, it was an Altered ;)

  20. Don is right, High & Mighty did not run in the gas classes. There was a time when Gasser meant something specific. Do not let the facts be distorted. Putting a truck axle under something does not make it a Gasser. Most of the fake "Gassers" posted on the HAMB can be lumped into the Rat Rod category. Take a look at Don's avatar. That is what a Gasser looks like.

How can I argue with the facts, C/A right there on the quarters.
I'm old enough to know better too, just a little before my time.
I'd bet that a good percentage of people (not just HAMBERS) would say it was a gasser.
Kind of like calling every FED with a blown and injected hemi a T/F dragster.
You guys are right on about historical accuracy though, as you know not everything you read on the internet is factual.

  27. Well here are my thoughts on it. Like them or not they are what I am thinking.

its a rag top and rag tops don't make good gassers for a reason. One they were not legal and two they are normally heavy pigs compared to what you will be racing against. You may could build a gas roadster but remember that you would be or will be racing against cars that weigh half as much as yours and still have as much motor.

Anyway that's my thoughts on it have a good time with it whatever you do.

They ran convertibles in NASCAR in the 50s didn't they? Just sayin........

  29. They ran rag tops on the beach @ Daytona. It is a large abyss between NASCAR and the 1320, the added weight of the beefed chassis down low would be a benefit on a banked tri oval but would not be on a short hop from a standing start.

That Wikipedia page is pretty funny. I wasn't around when guys were running these cars that inspired so many "gassers" today. However, I came across this. If you're looking to stick to the rules of the day, to be authentic, I'd seek out class rules. These may or may not be authentic, but it's a start. I didn't see mention of convertible in my quick skim.

I know that over the years I've seen folks corrected on their use of the term "gasser" and prompted to replace it with "street freak." Maybe that's more of what you're after? And, if so, that's OT.

Still, you've got a cool car. In the right hands it could be a pretty incredible mild custom.
