Technical Starting Engine After Car Sitting 3 Months

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 53CHKustom, Oct 16, 2015.

  1. No problem,

I forgot to mention the plug's didn't look too bad (to me). I assume you been starting the car (to run it) without driving it, which would result in them looking like that. They look a little rich, but the electrodes aren't fouled, and the color on the porcelain isn't too bad. Plug reading isn't nearly as easy as it used to be, with all the crap their putting in our fuel these days. It's been a while since I pulled the Edelbrock off my El Camino, but to the best of my memory, I had it set so the throttle blades closed about 3/4 of the way (with a gap left roughly big enough to put a pencil in it), and then adjusted the idle screw to get the idle speed where I wanted it.

Thanks, I'll have to check the carb out again. The R45TS plugs are $2.25 each at NAPA so I'll just replace them since they are pretty cheap.

Nothing wrong with the plug in the pic. Just check the gap and reinstall.

Thanks I guess I could use the $20 on new spark plugs towards something else for now :)

    Glad you got it started

I agree that gas should not go bad after 12 weeks, but
I did have gas go stale a few years ago after 12 weeks

The gas turned a Honey color and the truck would not start

Had to clean out the system

This could be due to the type of gas sold in my area, the time of year, and the hot temperatures in my garage that time of year, or just could of been a bad delivery at the station.

After that experience I don't top off the truck in the summer when I don't drive much, I add stabilizer in the summer.
And try to keep fresh gas in the tank.

Thanks for sharing that. I've been putting 89 octane from shell. I looked at my fuel filter but can't remember if it looked a honey color since the filter is visible and has a tan/gold color to begin with making it hard to tell the color of the fuel.

I like keeping a fuller tank because the sending unit doesn't seem too accurate (I don't even know what it's using for a sending unit) and I'm paranoid about running out of fuel if I run at lower levels. It can't hurt to put stabil even if I drive it every other Sunday 10 or so miles?

  7. Nope, not at all. StaBil just keeps the fuel from deteriorating. Personally, I go to Walmart and get a gallon jug of Marvel Mystery Oil and the biggest one they have of StaBil and make a little 50/50 concoction I can keep in the trunk in a smaller fuel additive can. That way I always have it on hand. Sorry I didn't get back to you till now, started my new job last Monday, had an Algebra 2 final yesterday, and displayed the T Bucket in our T & A car clubs chili cook off booth, busy week!

  9. He got it started, seems like it was flooded and the choke is misbehaving.

Thanks Kurt, that is great advice and I will keep that in mind! Congrats on the new job.

  11. Thanks, Dan, pretty happy with it so far other than the fact they will be sending me to Portsmouth, Me for training sometime in the near future. To damn cold in Maine for my blood!
