  1. I am in the process of building a 1936 model A coupe and i do not know what size of engine i should use. I know i am asking for opinions but thats what i am doing. I dont know if i should put a 400 engine in but i want the most torque, hp, and the biggest engine i can fit in my engine bay. Thank you all for your time.

  2. Well do you have Ford Model A or a 1936 Ford? Model A production ended in 1931....

  3. Model A ran 1928 -1931. So which is it, a model A or a '36?

You could use a 500+ inch engine, but really, what would be the point apart from showing off?

    Pics would help.

Also, I hope you have spent some time looking through this site to se what it's all about.

A 1936 Model A is a rare car, you should keep it stock!

Jon Do not dispair . The fine Gentlemen on the H A M B love to catch a person having a senior moment, they really are harm less but do not prevock them. Sorry I did not pass spelling in school. Now go get a cold one, get a 5 gallon bucket gather up your toughts and write your Question again. Slowly and with feeling. Don down on the corner

  10. Hey Jonathan, I see you're a 20 year old...guessing this might be your first hot rod. Welcome!

Before you go any further, read up on what we're about here. Traditional rods & customs.

Up for the challenge? Take a look at builds in the Traditional Hot Rods section. Buy some books (Don Montgomery's are phenomenal and the Bishop book "How to Build a Traditional Hot Rod" is a huge help), talk to some old timers...educate yourself.

Ryan has a good primer for what constitutes a traditional hot rod right here; pay attention to the "period correct" aspect. Look at the pics attached; study how the suspensions were built, what engines were used, styling, wheel/tire combos, finishes, etc.. Cars in this section are virtual time capsules; they are built in historic styles using historic parts (many times) using historic techniques.

The main board (Hokey Ass Message Board) is the place for hot rods & customs approximating those outlined in the Traditional Hot Rods section, but with a less-strict adherence to period correctness...these cars are traditionally styled, but may have more modern transmissions, brakes, etc.

Building a traditional car isn't a paint by numbers proposition, but there is a basic template; history provides that for us. It's what we do...it's who we are.
