They ran another car with no nose and a motor they borrowed from a boat racer, it had upswept headers about 3' long. I will try to find some pics.

This is the car, but after they changed to more conventional headers. I will find a pic with the long headers, but it will take a bit. Your post made me think of this car, because lots of dump and with the long boat headers, it was really wild looking. I think this is later than the car you posted, maybe '66??

I didn't ask, but I'd bet it's a clone. The Arfons went to jet power later, but this early version was Allison powered.

There is so much Dump on that Engine I am surprised that there was room for the front half of the oil pan! A static side view would be great to see of this Dragster.
Todays modern Nostagia Top Fuel Cars have incredible performance, but cannot even remotely compete with the originals for individuality, and personalty. 1966-1969 Was "The" Holy grail time period for Top Fuel Cars in my opinion.
I wish I had been just a little bit older, so I could have been there to watch them run.

    Here's a "regular" shot of the dumped, weed-sweeper car, shown behind Beebe and Mulligan. Sojourners-5.jpg Sojourners-1.jpg Sojourners-2.jpg Sojourners-3.jpg Sojourners-4.jpg

Pics of the Warren/ Coburn/ Miller car. Pics start about 68`, might be later than the ones you are talking about.

"Dump" is a reflection of the motor possision and pinion hight, Modern FE dragsters have the motor out further and use a Ford 9" rear (pinion is 1/2" lower) Older dragsters the motor was set back and used either a Olds r/e or Chrys 8 3/4 with a higher pinion. Cars with really sivere dump prob had a banjo r/e with the pinion on axle centerline..

Later, wrong car. And those zoomies a stubbies compared to the ones I'm talking about, when I say "3 feet" I'm serious, they were LOOOONG. I have been hunting, it will take me a while, but I WILL find them.

    Interesting, thanks for explaining that.
(And I always thought it was so the mill would be level when the front wheels were up.... ;))

  22. The dragster in the pics belongs to Aaron Von Minden, AKA Savage on the H.A.M.B. He bought it from the Willford family and has rebuilt the whole car since then. Tom would be very happy. Super cool car!

Thanks for the pictures Kev, The car looks great. Tom and I had talked about putting the car together and running Eagle Field, and Toutle. We thought we could re-live the fun we had back in the 80's, but it was not to be. Congrats to Aaron for a job well done, I would like to meet him someday. BTW, Tom always referred to it as the "Swoopy Tail".

    George...
Do you have the photo on file, or are you searching the internet?
Are you entering Warren, Coburn, and Miller, or are you entering
Warren, Coburn, and Warren? (see my earlier photo).
I am under the impression that Marvin Miller was not yet in the picture with the earlier cars that were sm. blk. Chev. powered.
BTW...have you seen the twin engine car with the back engine being a Hemi, and the front being a sm. blk. Chevy?

Is there any info on the first building of the Willford fueler ?

Like what kind of frame did they use as it has a different looking roll bar

That car is so very cool. It pushed so easy and fired right up. I love every bit of it. The Weed Burners put it over the top for sure. It made the weekend for sure.

Savage sign me up for next year!

Don, The chassis was built by the owner, Jim Keeter (Long Beach), the body by Doug Kruse. It was driven by Harrell Amyx. It was a Gas Dragster. Tom bought it in '86, either from or through Jr. Thompson, the first time I saw it was at a Gasser Match race between JR. and Jack Coonrod at Redding, Ca. Tom had been to LA on one of his buying sprees. He had a couple of Dragmasters on the load as well ! Swoopy Tail Drag News.jpg

I'm searching my old magazines. Kinda like if your local public library didn't bother with the dewey decimal system.:rolleyes: I did several google searchs, the pic in question is not online, near as I can figure. On-line, I have searched James Warren, Roger Coburn, rain for Rent, and Ridge Route Terrors. If it is posted online somewhere, it probably doesn't have their name attached.
Yes, I have seen that car, That car preceded the full-bodied car you posted, which I think preceded the short body car I posted. I think the car I am posting dates from '65/'66, I will try to clarify the order of these cars.

Doh! Until you mentioned Harold Amyx, I never made the connection, I think I posted a photo of this car on the gas dragster thread! I'll take a look.
