:D Here`s my definition of an expert.
    Ex=Has been
    Spurt=Drip under pressure
Combine the two and you get a"Has been drip".:p

Everyone needs to calm down and pop some pills, mmmmk?

I realize Gary's (steel rebel) comments come across as harsh and ultimatum-istic... how's that for a word? But in person, he is very kind and humble from my experience. I'm happy to have him here, happy to have met him, and happy to have the privilege of sitting in his roadster. I will be honest in saying I didn't like his T until I saw it in person. I think buckets are really difficult to capture the proportions of with a camera. In person, his car is really neat, and if anything, it is a testament to the dedication it took him to reach his goal. Gary, can you post a picture of when you first got it done with the Ford engine? And of course, another one of the finished product photos? We all know you love to post those!

"ultimatum-istic' " "de-uglifing" Are those really words. Thanks Tim but I really take this shit too seriously. The world isn't going to change if someone builds what I think is another ugly T bucket.
Thanks again Tim but I don't think anybody here wants to see more photos of my roadster. If so just go back in the thread and see lots of them. I'll just check in perodiclly and see what's going on. I do love what you are doing with yours though.

Actually your so called "daffy definition" fits poorly and is in bad taste.
In short, it is just plain stupid !
We need to get back to the good stuff here, any more progress to share Tim ? :)

  10. You'll have to go back quite a ways, but to the best of my recolection, his isn't really a seperate seat back, but more just paddIng the back of the body. This allows a lot more space inside the bucket. I'm fairly certain Chip's (T!) body is not streched.

Haha. Yes, a little bit of progress to report. I will try to finish what I'm working on to "photo worthy", then post a couple pics this weekend. Gonna go see Kiwi Tinbender Paul in a few hours, which means I should probably close my eyes for a second or two.

  12. Thanks Mr Blownfuel, interesting point and as Tim just mentioned, photo's can be deceiving when trying to capture T Roadsters. Chips body does look long from behind the door to the back of the body though compared to my NZ made body.
Hi Jeremy, I have been busy rebuilding a trailer that my sister and I have purchased which has given me an excellent opportunity to practice my mig welding etc. I actually come in doors this evening to tell Mum that I was so enjoying working out in the garage I can't wait to get the trailer finished and get stuck back into the Roadster. I finally purchased a self tinting welding helmet which does Tig, Mig Arc and S/S so my confidence is improving each time I use the welder now.
Tim, I really appreciate you posting updates with photo's here of the work you are doing on your T and really admire how you get so much done in a small garage and to such a high quality.
Finally, ain't we all glad that the Good Lord made each and every one of us different with different ideas of what is how things should be and look.

For some reason I felt the need to post pictures again of my RPU. :)
Who am I kidding :D Any chance is good.
I'm close to the take her apart for detailing and finishing stage.

Maybe all the useless fighting can stop and we can get back to having fun.
Yes it's true that my RPU isn't a bucket, but it is a T and I like it. :D
Maybe Chip will rejoin the party, maybe not.
I for one would prefer not to hear further from anyone other than him what should or should not be posted here or for that matter anyone else who want's to put in their 2 cents worth on his behalf.

Whip, glad to hear that the welding is improving.
A good auto dark helmet really is an amazing thing.

Larry, I may have missed it if you have already clarified, but where did you source your grill mesh material. Looks real nice and I'm ready to fill my grill shell. Keep up the nice work.

    Thanks fellas.
Mike, what I used is a stainless steel mesh in a #4 size. I just looked for a local supplier of wire mesh products and got it there.
    Cost was about $100.

  17. Chip's car doesn't have a back cushion, but it's fairly comfortable without it. I wouldn't ride to LARS in it like it is, but for around town, it's acceptable. I think he is planning a thin layer of foam just to keep your back off the 'glass. His lawn-chair webbing in the seat bottom really works!

  18. I wish I could say that I'm more observant, but Even after riding in it, I didn't realize that Chip's car didn't have a back cushion in it. For short blasts around town, you don't really notice the lack of a back cushion in there. I guess I was more intrigued by the fact that the rear slick was mere inches from my elbow!

  19. I might have been mixing it up with my buddies old bucket here. He's 6'5" and was quite comfortable in a standard sized bucket with just upholstery on the glass bucket back.

  20. Whip,
Don't remember if I posted it on here, but I'm also gathering parts for a trailer for mine. I have a roughly 3' to 4' square trailer chassis, a 4'x2.5'x1.5' Coke cooler from the 30's or 40's (no refrideration unit, it was just an ice box), and a few other items I will need. I want to hide a fuel cell in the base of the cooler and be able to transfer gas from the cell to the T's tank on the move. To do this, I'm thinking of using a boat outboard gas can style connector between the T and trailer, a little VW styled electric fuel pump, and a Chevy Dually dual tank selector valve on the T's tank vent hose to allow venting and filling through the same fitting. The only potential problem I can see is a possible pressure buildup while filling, because the vent path will be blocked during filling, but just cycling the selector valve to vent off any pressure for a few seconds should fix that. Anybody see any holes in my logic?

Wow...I was actually considering doing the same thing with my trailer!
My fill cap itself is vented...but I'm not sure its vented enough to prevent some pressure buildup from happening.

The thing to consider is how fast you really need the fuel transfer to happen.

Refilling the tank in a number of minutes will potentially create some venting issues. (just a maybe.)
However if you used a restrictor in the outlet of the aux pump the transfer could take place over an extended period of time while you drive...thus the cap vent would be fine.

Of course the available main tank volume would have to be considered as well, or that cap vent could end up spraying gas! Not a good thing!

In my opinion your idea would work well with the restricted fuel transfer line actually T'eed into the main outlet of the tank (before the fuel pump) and due to the tank vent no additional fuel pressure would actually be seen by the needle/seat assembly. With venting it isn't a closed system so it can't pressurize.

I think with some finessing it could be a very workable!

  22. Brilliant idea for the extra fuel tank hidden in the trailer but the only concern I can think of is how safe the flexible hose near the hitch connection would be. I am lucky in one way that I have a huge fuel tank in the pickup bed that holds approximately the same amount of fuel as my daily driver BMW. The disadvantage I have though is I don't have much luggage space. Just look up the net and a BMW holds 16.9 Gallons of fuel so I would think my T holds approximately the same amount. So that gets me quite a few miles between fills unless I step on the loud pedal and use the two outer carbs also.
Getting back to the welding, I hadn't used a mig welder for thirty years so I was very rusty at first. Funnily enough with the auto darkening helmet, my tig welding improved immensely which boasted my confidence. So, if one can see what one is trying to weld, then that is a great help.

the auto darkening weld helmets are a big help to those of us that are basically amateur welders

I think that the gas tank in the trailer thing is a very bad idea that has tragedy written all over it. I'm not even sure about the legality of it but beyond that I can see all sorts of ways you could die from something like that.

  25. Hmmm.....I planned on running the line right up the top of the trailer tongueand then up under the bed to the tank. The pump I'm using isn't much bigger than a golf ball, so I don't think it will create too much excess pressure. These were real popular in the late 70's /early 80's as air cooled VW upgrades, they didn't flow enough for much else. As far as overfilling goes, The gas gauge will still work,so I figured on shutting it off close to full. Never thought about putting it in the fuel suction line, as long as it's upstream of the cars pump, I think that would work better!

  26. Ha! That's so true!

I remember reading articles in magazines back during the "fuel shortages" of the '70s where this was done a lot - had to get the hot rod to the Nationals! I'd think with today's quick disconnect and anti-rollover valves that the safety aspect would go way up.

I'm driving around with 11 gal of fuel less than a foot from the back of my head!
    Did you notice?
    Tragedy starts with a "T"! :D:D

A restricted fuel flow with the restriction at the trailer tank itself.
The fuel transfer only on at certain times and usually on the highway.
A quality braided hose to the valve. It could be reasonably safe.

I agree its a bit off the wall...but I think the biggest thing that makes it potentially just not worth the effort is that its nice to hop/crawl out of a bucket every couple of hours and take a 10 minute break from driving.
My gas stops work out to every two hours on the highway.
Hopefully every 2.5 hours next summer and thats really as long as I WANT to be in it before a walk around and a Pepsi. ;)

My fuel tank is also right behind me and I can relate to wanting to get out and stretch my legs.
Emptying my bladder also is a priority :D

  29. HA!

  30. I built my tank to give me around 250 miles, always in reach of a 24 hour gas station.
The idea of a transfer tank in a trailer while moving doesn't excite me.
