The original Oilers thought so. That's good enough for me.

That's the only photo I have ever seen of it, gotta think theres more out there somewhere. Its hard to believe this car never got any ink. Right in the thick of the southern California hot rod scene, and it really was a beauty. Big cad and a Carson top, it really would have stood out in 1955.

  10. Where did you crop that photo from?

Sure looks like it! Nice find! I'll post the original uncropped pic in a bit. It was in Hot Rod Deluxe a coupe years ago.

Had a chance to trade my pickup for this. Still think about it. Love those old Phaetons.

Heres the original image, or most of it, its too big for my scanner. There was an entire article on this show in July 2010 HRD (I still have a tough time using that acronym, to me it means Vincent) this was taken at a show at a Thrifties drug store on May 5, 1955, at the corner of Vermont Avenue and Hollywood Blvd.

Heres a shot of the other side of the parking lot. Sparks & Bonny Willys and Porters truck, the cragar powered modified had a (The HORROR!) fiberglass body and was in Car Craft. I believe I have seen the '36 5 window in a Spotlight book I have on the 1955 Great Bend nats, but I'm not certain. Maybe someone can id that car?

That modified was in the Bill Harrah collection, unless it sold in one of the many auctions after his passing. Bob

I THINK it was actually written up in PHR as well, which is kind of funny as it was 10 years after the show.

...Makes me appreciate my steel '27 tub atop '32 rails...just got some nice quarter panels for the rear, and some better doors.
Weather has cooled off (finally!) gets to 104 here in summer...Now my shop is cooler.

Here are a couple of 35's from Oregon in the early 50's, 101-c is Wayne Mahaffey's, powered by a Cad flathead, along with Mid Barbour's, both were running at the drags in those days. Wayne's is fully restored and currently resides in the World of Speed Museum, here locally. 2012-09-27 191422.jpg 2012-09-27 191647.jpg 2012-09-27 191624.jpg

^^Wow! Any restored pics? That's REALLY nice!

  23. Two 34 phaetons side by side, how tasty!

And thanks for the full picture, or at least most of it. My HRD collection starts in 2011, and I haven't back filled the missing remaining ones yet.

Yup. It's great fun. Same car, different passengers. Pics taken at Gow! Prescott Hillclimb this year.

Hey, GearHead, the phaetons were victims of political correctness of the '40s and '50s. Such a shame that they were trashed or otherwise ignored. The rodder wannabees of the times had all the other body styles to choose from, and phaetons WERE moredoors as they were later called. You have what appears to be a survivor, and I would build that baby to your own tastes, and FUCK anyone who criticizes you. Remember, one of the charter members of the L A Roadsters, Dick Scritchfield, drives a beautiful Deuce phaeton around Hawaii. Jim Jacobs (Jake of Pete & Jake's) has a cool brush-painted '29 phaeton, and Mel Taormino had a beautiful '34. They are neat rides, so don't let anyone tell you different. Good luck, and GO FOR IT.

  30. Are you running the stock cowl tank, or have you relocated fuel somewhere else?
