Looks like drag racing front runners to me. The tread looks like Mickey Thompson.

From the pic on the yellow coupe, the scrub radius looks acceptable, so I can ***ume your hard steering is possibly either way too much caster for whatever steering ratio you have, OR a binding in the steering box itself.

What box do you have, and how many turns lock-to-lock on the steering wheel?

Mickey Thompsons front runners, sportsmans have rounded tread and a very small foot print. I run them on my coupe, work pretty good on the street as well. picture023.jpg

  8. I agree, Mickey Thompson, Goodyear or Hoosers race car front runners. Look in a Jeg's catalog.

Actually...it isn't that bad compared to when I bought the car because I have done a lot already...
I can one hand steer it in a parking lot...I am just trying to get it the best it can be...
The front tires is all that I have left to do to make it steer easier...

"either way too much caster " ...when I bought the car it had about 12* and right now it is about 3*...
"OR a binding in the steering box itself"...Nah...box is new...Ford Maverick as I recall...don't know about the ratio...

Thanx to all of you for your replies and input...very helpful...
I am in agreement with the MTs...that's what I have on the rear :)

MT sportsman , make sure when you order them you specify that as the MT E.T. fronts are flat across the tread and have a lower ply rating ( true drag style front )

the secret to driving without power steering is try to keep it at a slow roll while you turn the wheel as the movement helps you it acts like a bearing , its when you stop its a bear to turn , my first semis were manual steering and until I learned this from a old driver , I was working out trying to turn with 10" wide bias tires while driving in the city .

  12. I have run those on the street on an OT Charger, they work well even on a heavier car. I liked them.

Hmmmmn I will need fronts for my project eventually maybe I will put those on my list. I was thinking 185 pirrelli's but the M/Ts may work really well for me.

I think you can actually still buy those or the equivalent aside from buying them from Coker. Not to say that Coker is not a good source. Coker has excellent warrantee service.

PnB I checked on the zx Michelins ( I wanted a set but couldn't get them from my wholesaler ) , Coker owns the molds, NLA from Michelin ..

as for the M/Ts they are a light truck 4 ply rated tire . they hold up to street driving real good , not like some of the other front drag styles which are 2 ply and do not like potholes or expansion joints .. and mickey thompson tires are Coopers .

  14. Stimpy I wondered about the Michelins. It seems to me that diamond back had some fair copies a couple of years back but they were no doubt not Michelins.

We have a pair of the M/Ts on a 70 Charger that have been on there about 7 or 8 years now. The car doesn't see lots of highway miles, but it gets driven a lot like most of the hot rods around. On my car they would have to go about anywhere when I was not on my scooter. Coopers are good tires I would like to know how well the M/Ts hold up mileage wise. I know that the sportsman pro rear tires are pretty soft and are not long mile tires, but if you screw 'em on you can run 'em low and wrinkle the sidewalls. :D

we have gotten 4 seasons out of the fronts vs 3/4 of a season out of the rears ... only problems were flat spotting from doing landings like one of southwest airlines 737's at 20 or 40'..and side scuffing from turning as the car pushes the wheels due to the spool
they have about 6000 street miles on them ( we live close to the track or it gets a ride there if we go to others , it does get driven to the local shows within 50 miles ) the last set the rubber dry rotted and the tread started splitting before half of the tread was used ( my fault for leaving them on the car on concrete and near a welder and in sun light ) , this set we take of them and keep them on rubber mudflaps and keep them covered . the way its looking other than dragstrip wear I say we can get about 20k from them realisticly .

  16. 20K isn't bad for a performance oriented tire. That is about tires every two years for me and that's not so bad, I only get about 10-15K out of my bike tires.
