2 Makita angle grinders, 1 Air powered grinder, 1 die grinder and 1 angle die grinder. At age 68 my welds still look like crap. Forgot to mention 13 various files for the tedious work........... Jeff

Down here your welds get inspected during the build, no grinding until after inspection.

  4. I'm going to wager that the cars on the road are generally better because of that.

Remember years ago when I was in my 20's. Was at Babcock And Wilcox taking a pressure vessel certification. The old saying was. It's not how well you weld it's how well you grind.
The instructor was an inspiration. 2000 people and as a new hire I didn't have a time card in the rack. I approached the time keeper and gave him my name. Immediately he wrote down my employee number. Just amazed that he knew it I exclaimed to the instructor how and the heck with that many employees he could remember my number.
    His answer. That's nothing.
    He can't weld.

Sometimes I ask myself if I am a grinder who welds or a welder who grinds. HAHA

And here I thought dirt dauber welds were traditional. I guess the previous owners of my car didn't own a grinder!

    Funny stuff guys.

  12. I have discovered that the welds I made when I was thirty seven are a hellava lot better than the ones I am making at sixty seven. I think I know why but don't want to admit it...

Last year I had cataract surgery. I can weld again. I didn't realize how bad my eyes were; it explains the really nice welds that were 1/4" away from the joint!

I started wearing mag glasses under my hood a few years back...was like night and day, then happened across a Mag glass for my helmet...that and the large auto darkening lens...mercy...I can see again!

Where do I find such a lense? I bought my hood at Praxair and I have an added magnifier inside.

We might be talking the same thing?

I have a 1.5 mag cover glass that goes in front of my lens (inside the helmet), it's not the lens that is magnified.

My Dad was a boiler shop welder for almost 50 years,no positioners, weld it where it stands, vert.,horz,overhead.
He could lay a weld that I still can,t match.

  19. "Now-Just because you can wash the sheets doesn't mean it's OK to shit the bed." That's what my welding instructor used to say about us using grinders.:D

Some hamber here said this a few years back. "Chrome on Bass welds is like suntan lotion on boobs" now that's another great analogy there.

Great welds are what friends are for! I'm way to particular to weld my own stuff!...unless it's an emergency.

Many years in training as a welder . Stationary Engineer by trade . Just remember , structure and sheet metal different type of welding . OEM cars are just tacked ( spot ) welded together. Tack or spot your panels return hours later add a few more , repeat until fully welded . Tig is the answer for heat control but most don't have access , Mig works for all of us . Just be clean and slow go to stop warpage issues that are worse to repair than the rust started out to be

just got back from repairing a tank ( r stamp ) we use a spool gun if its a easy spot , but if the metal is a problem we hand tig it , I was workign with my buddys mig welder and liked how smooth it was going , and checked all the settings and stuff , came home to play with my welder and I have noticed since I borrowed it out ( its a little 120 handimig ) several years ago its never been quiet the same , the guy who I borrowed it to said it kept bird nesting in the cabinet or hanging up at the tip , I kept on blaming it on the feed rollers and the wire, then the tension , well I wanted a new longer gun for it ( 8' is not enough ) so I got a 15' for $150 ( HTP) , and ran the wire thru it and it was smooth as my buds big one welded beautifully for a mini mig . so I got thinking and pulled the liner on the old one . MF'er the liner has 3 kinks in it and one you can see the plier marks in it where they tried to dekink it . called the guy who borrowed it and he said he never took it apart , but his kid used it earlier . he asked him . 4 years and I find Out the kid closed a car door on the hose and tried to fix it . but didn't say nothing ... well now to order a new liner for my tweco ain't gonna throw it out .. and the kid is paying for it he said ..

I've never been a good welder, but my welds at least held. It has gotten worse as my eyes age, so I now let my Son Dan do all my welding for me. I feel bad taking his time away from his projects, but he is good about doing it.

I needed a motor mount for the engine in my rpu, and a few weeks ago he did this one for me.
