Hey Jake, I see you joined today; glad to have you! This thread is sorta like an electronic reference library for 1950's hot rods...pure unadulterated 50's goodness. I, too would highly recommend going thru this thread and soaking it all in. If you want some other reference material, period magazines are a great source, as are the Don Montgomery and Bishop/Tardel books. If you're more interested in 60's style stuff, check out this thread; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...ome-on-post-pictures-of-what-you-like.132391/
The Swedish 50s built 32 just posted by Anders has some unusual bits on it; I have never seen round stock or tubing used for cycle fenders. I am thinking these are less prone to the common stress cracks of flat steel? and I was try to see the upper and lower shock mounts...different for sure lastly it has front and rear mounted side body lights. I bet those were required? I had a mid 50s car from Berlin with one side light added, and research showed that "any car parked on certain German city streets, must have a light on the DRIVER side, that remain "on" when parked, for safety" who would have thunk there were rods in Europe, Scandinavia and beyond, at that time. A cool slice of worldwide hotrodding
Article says is build I 1959-60 The seats is austin, but a lot of BMC seat are the same. The other rod is the Peder Lundgren a bone. Article says it runs scintilla magnet, Eddie Meyer heads, dual 97 on a hi riser Eddie Meyer capped off with a cast Eddie Meyer aircleaner.
These cars where some of the first hotrods in Sweden started in the late 50:s. There had been hopped up ones before but they where inspired by competion and sportscars. But these where inspired by Hotrod magasines that have find its way to sweden at the time. Most guys could problaby not even read them but they see the pictures. So they tryed there best to build what they see in the magasines. I think its a blinker from maybe Mercedes on the side of the rod.
Just as you said, and also as I said -- Dan Kilcup bought the '40 from Bell Telephone for his wife to drive, but the final result turned out to be something more special than the little lady's daily driver: Great car, great engine.
All three of these were quite '50s correct externally: There were some non-'50s details about the chassis on the '36 and the engine/trans in the T, but otherwise they were all pretty faithful to the decade in which I started driving.
Is that white lightning the roadster? Have seen some old pictures of it at shows. Is one beautiful car
I'm not sure on the year of that photo, but I think its 1953. I really like the headlight bar and hairpins on that car as well as the double dip axle. I have one on my stash, not sure what I plan to do with it. Those axles went through a period in the late forties/early fifties when they were pretty popular. The headlights look like Arrow 775's. Its a pretty nice really well finished car.
The T roadster later morphed into this Ardun powered altered that ran at SLC dragstrips. Even later the Ardun was replaced with a GMC 6. Mick
Mick is the man! As usual...Looks like the mopar axle was replaced with a V8-60 at the time of the Ardun photo? What do you know about the car at the time of the B&W photo? I noticed the "Edelbrock Equipped" on the cowl, I assume it was probably red? The hairpins are quite distinctive.
Thanks now I understand. I was not aware of the back story on the car at all, it was just Danny's '40. That guy was not one of our "heroes" but he was a wizard. Helluva nice guy too, well at least he treated me well. BTW @oldebob good call on this thread man, makes for good reading and looking.
This truck was a a hot rod party I attended in the north country of New York. The owner/builder was a follow young guy I for got his name. The cab was chopped in the fifties- Note fishing rod and camping gear.
^^^ Memory not great but I wonder if that New Jersey truck belongs to "flatpower" on here....Randy Bianchi Jr
The more I look at this sweet T, the more I see some interesting contrasts; chromed front axle, backing plates, spindles?, spring, headlight bar, radius rods, windshield, and stanchions but no stainless on the 32 rad shell or insert. Are those door hinges chromed too? Also notice the filled fuel filler door on the cowl. Seriously cool little hot rod.
