Dito on Blair's Speed Shop in Pasadena. I spent much time at this place. Blair's was a neat place for early gear-heads.

  2. I don't think TommyD would try to put one over on us like that. It's just that he comes up with some of the damndest pictures that I ain't never seen before. Would that be one of Arfons' cars?

I know. But I still think you'd need someplace like Bonneville to run cars that wide four abreast...

I wonder if this is the AMC car that Hayden Profitt drove? Dave Jeffers build the original chassis with heavy sponsorship from AMC...had an AMC engine, AMC rear end, etc...it was not all that competitive, even with Hayden running it (with Les Shockley as crew chief)...Grant Piston Rings was also a sponsor, once called the "Grant Rambler.").

  5. Same car. Actually it held the NHRA ET record briefly at 8.11. It was also driven by bill Hayes. Not bad really for a real AMC motor. It was called the Grant Rambler SST.
Most late 60's race cars were CONSTANTLY rebuilt or replaced with older versions being sold to other racers.

  6. Speaking of wings, funny cars etc. Check this out!
    From NHRA Phil Burgess column
"Last Friday, I showed what I thought was a pretty cool photo of the Mickey Thompson Mustang with a Top Fuel rear wing sticking out of the roof, but famed Northwest historian “Flyin’ Phil” Elliott one-upped me with this pic, showing wings at both ends! “According to Pat Foster, this configuration was only tried in pre-race testing at Bristol, the week prior to the AHRA Spring Nationals," wrote the other Phil. "The tech officials took one look at the inability for the body to tilt up without taking the front wing off and said, ‘Nope.’ PF said the downforce caused the engine to pull way down, and each test run ended in piston smoke.” Way cool photo! "

Me too. For the time, it was like 'Disneyland' for early gear-heads.

I think Don Moyer owns this car now and if I recall correctly he even has the amc engine that was in it Les Shockley told me that car was Amazing for what it was being that it was amc powered running with the hemis of the time

  10. Don't think they were talking about Doug or Sturm since they say it will give GM owners something to cheer about, and both of them drove Chevy's

Stone, Woods, & Cook, far lane, racing Arnie Beswick...I think that both of these cars had steel bodies, anyone else?

Santa Ana, no ID on flathead powered dragster (I don't think it is John Bradley)

This might be Bill Coburn at Pomona, though I don't remember his coupe in red...

Dick Lohr, from Indiana, before his funny cars...

Ed Ranchaski, back when funny cars still had metal bodies...

From George Klass...this picture reminds us that even the big guys towed in on open trailers, though Maz's trailer was a whole lot nicer than most....you really get an idea of how good the candy red paint was from this picture.

Also from George Klass: I think that Jot Horne built this Ranger aircraft engine-powered roadster. He also designed and built intake manifolds for Olds and Cad engines, one of which Norm Grabowski ran on his street T. This looks like Santa Ana.

Ohio George at the Nationals, which he usually won...he was a real mechanic who build his own stuff, even cast his own aluminum adaptors from engine to trans...

I received a phone call a few months back from Dick Landy's daughter and she had a few interesting stories about her day.

Thank you for this picture. I had three childhood heroes, these are two of them. The other one played defense for the Boston Bruins in the very early 70's. Long live "Big" and "the Snake"

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. I believe this pic may have been taken at Yellow River Drag Strip 14 miles east of Atlanta.

  23. If memory serves me correctly..This was Arnie's first all glass bodied car.

  24. I don't know, but Platt was racing Frank Oglesby the day of that terrible, terrible accident.

  25. It was. All glass cars were just coming in in 1966. Many still had steel shells with glass doors, fenders, etc. The transition era ( so called as they transitioned from stockers to funny cars) is my favorite. Cars were all over the place, some all out FC's, others mostly SS'ers with et's ranging from the 10's to low 8's. A WILD time.
