Did that square front tire really help handling?

 

I was trying to figure out what that was, too. I have no idea.

 

It was painted on the Tire to create an optical illusion while rotating .....

 

I remember dirt cars lifting the left front in the turns, so when it stopped turning or was turning too slow, it would look really different at night from the infield. A great idea from a bored crew guy!!!

Actually although not it's intended use but by far the safest position to travel in no doubt instead of seated facing forward - " Passengers - now please position your seats for a possible frontal impact"

 

With a high backed seat I would agree with you. BUT with those lowbacks, would be a recipe for a snapped neck = dead !

 

Putting a face on it: From the 1957 Ambler, PA High School yearbook, this is James Knott, one of the passengers killed in this wreck and whose grieving father arranged for the car to be shown at high schools as a reminder for students to drive safely.

The yearbook went to press shortly before the accident so there was no mention of it.

OXBOW BRIDGE DEDICATION 1926 Baker County Historical Society - Crossing the Snake River between Idaho and Copperfield, Oregon. Horses brought the large pieces down in to Hell's Canyon from Baker City via Richland and Halfway, Oregon. This is just below present Oxbow Dam about 2 miles and on the other side of the Snake's oxbow bend.
