I find it funny the number of cars at shows I see with a HAMB Alliance firewall tags, that wouldn't pass as "Traditional". The check still cleared though. Oh well, I guess only the "pretty girls" get asked to the prom. Still, I really like the level of quality and workmanship of the builds posted here. Can't please everyone.
"I personally need to know what kind of pomade is best" Why hell, Dapper Dan a course. I get what the OP is saying, though I haven't been a HAMBer long. It is a sort of natural evolution (or devolution) due to increased membership and thus a necessary evil. Everyone is different and that is the rub. There are people who genuinely don't know what color to paint their wheels or whatever and there are people on here that are good at that (sort of like decorators.) So it creates "static" or dilutes the content that the purists love. Can't hate em for that but we should all be positive and not hate on others. Just weed through and ignore what you don't consider relevant but maintain decorum at all cost. If it's too far out the moderators will snag it. That works both ways too, if someone offends you, just ignore it. You can't deal an ass wuppin through a computer monitor. That's my 2 cents on the subject though it will probably draw a negative comment or two. I personally love this place for the tech that is being passed on and appreciate the older and (most times) wiser members who are mostly benevolent, patient, and are attempting to alleviate ignorance about a subject that we are all passionate about. Thanks guys
The Step Van thread is alive and has a new home in the HAMB "Step Vans, COE's, 1Ton+" social forum. See it here; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/step-van-thread-imported-from-main-board.997676/ The COE thread is open; now hosted on the COE's social forum - see it here; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/coe-picture-thread-imported-from-main-board.997663/ Bottom line on this whole discussion is that we have consistently moved toward a more focused approach over the last few years. I was around beginning in 01-02 (under a different screen name) and remember well the cuffed jeans, goldchainer-bashing, fecals the clown, etc...was it fun? Yeah. But so were fart/wiener jokes and breaking into grandpa's liquor cabinet when we were kids (okay, those still are fun...just not as much). The HAMB has grown up; I think for the better.
I tend to think sometimes the reigns are a little too loose! I come here to discuss and learn about traditional and real old hot rods. Not a modern interpretation of them. Newstalgia, and retro styled repop junk leave me cold. As sort a comparison, if you were to show up on a vintage rifle site with pics or questions about your new wood stocked Tikka you would get asked to leave, somewhat less than politely.
Is a Cycle Car a Traditional Hot Rod ? Why is this topic 'Lets talk Cycle Cars' still on the main forum ?
I can't and won't speak for Ryan or the other staff members...my opinion is that cyclecars, while not exactly a primary focus, aren't too far out on the periphery; many were built as speedsters and racers (did you go through that thread?) From an editorial perspective, they fit. The thread is also self-contained...we don't get a daily cyclecar build thread/query. If we did, perhaps we'd have to reexamine. JMO.
just my 2 cents. but COEs are traditional. I know at least one was customized in the late 50's early 60's What it all comes down to , is if you don't like it, you don't have to read it. Everybody's "traditional" is going to be slightly differant. I have lost a lot of interest in the HAMB, as two of my favorite threads are now "off topic" Sad, I thought we were all in this together.
6. Was your thread about something other than traditional hot rods and customs? Aside from a few "sidebar" topics that interest the staff here, we don't allow off topic posts. Your definition of "traditional" might differ from ours. That's fine. However, this is our forum and it's our definition that the forum is run off of. ^^^ the last paragraph in the HAMB rules. I applaud the re-focus.
What it all comes down to is it is not " if you don't like it, you don't have to read it" ......... it was a editorial decision. We are into Traditional Hot Rods and Customs and I would think you would appreciate that none of the COE and similar type threads were deleted, just moved to their own specific area. Frankly not sure why would lose interest......Your "two favorite threads" have their own specific area and it's up to you if you want to enjoy them...... or not.
Always appreciate feedback. I've been working on re-opening and merging closed COE/Van/Big Truck threads to the social forums. If that's your interest, you have your own playground where you can go balls deep without fear of moderation. Boss man was pretty darn wise to create that...everyone wins here; hardcore traditional hot rods & custom guys (pejoratively referred to as 'purists') have the focused sections, guys that are into vintage styled/inspired rods/customs have the main board, and specific interests (big trucks, tool geeks, local clubs, and religious folk) have their own groups (social forums). Can't beat that, IMO.
COE social forum is here; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/coes-cab-over-engine.283/ Step Van & Big Truck social forum is here; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/step-vans-coes-1-ton-trucks.851/
There was a topic on Conventional trucks that was closed some time ago. I have been looking for that to ask if it can be saved to another section of the forum as it to had some very good information.
I don't use the Social Groups that often, if I did would one I added a post to show up in the Alerts just like a normal board post? Bob
OK I found it. Link to the last page. Can it be moved to a social group or something please ? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hot-rod-custom-big-rigs-peterbilts-etc-etc.98449/page-7
Done. Here it is; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/hot-rod-custom-big-rigs.998191/ It's now open & in the Step Van, COE, and 1 Ton + trucks social group
I've had a couple of threads deleted. At first I didn't know why. However, I suspect now that it was due to my '42 ton an a half having a proposed Chevy IFS front suspension in it. Then I was told on another site that The Mods can be "very picky" as to whats posted here. So I try to keep my questions to a minimum and stay outta the way. I buy a few things from the classified section but that's it. Matter of fact, Had I not been bored shitless tonight, I wouldn't have found this thread. glad I did, I didn't know about the social forums till this very minute. For what it's worth, I think this site could stand to loosen up a bit. Please note that I'm only a lurker here, and this is just my opinion. I'm not trying to start any shit.
Not sure what you're looking at. Any logged in member can view, reply, or post new threads in both the COE and the Step Vans/COE/Big Truck social forums. I even registered a test dummy to test it out; See here that my test account is not subscribed to any social forums; Test post (reply) in the Cab Over Engine social forum; Test post (reply) in the Step Van/COE/1 Ton + social forum; Test thread in COE forum; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/test.998529/ Test thread in Step Van/COE/1 Ton + social forum; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/test.998528/ If you are logged in and having issues/not seeing these posts, please reply below.
You're right. I can view that one, just not the others. I'll try and join them as 31Vickey suggests. Thanks.
Yes, other social forums are moderated by the admins of those groups. It's up to them whether or not to let non-members view their forums or even let others join. The two social forums discussed in this thread are open to all.
