I've seen pics on instagram, but it's been silent for a while. My guess is a sensational,in your face BOOM,roll out.Cars like this don't get found and restored every day.
I see one of my favorite tricks of the "little book" era, the mirrored firewall. Spoiler alert: I'll be using that one on my upcoming build.
One of the things that has made this find so "weird" to me is all of the rumors floating about how it was being "restored." I haven't seen the car and know very little about what state it's in now. That being said, I completely agree that this car deserves to be accurately restored to the way it was when it graced the cover of R&C. In fact, that absolutely needs to happen. It would be almost irresponsible for that not to happen. BUT, if that's not happening at least the thing isn't rotting away in a chicken coupe somewhere anymore. And at least it's being cared for so that some day it could be restored the way it deserves. Know what I mean? Like I said, it's all really weird to me... And I can't wait to learn more. I'll keep you all updated with what I find!
The last I saw of it was when it briefly had a HAMB build thread. From what I remember the owner wanted to build a "street" version of the car and at that point the 5-speed was already installed along with a few other modern concessions. One can hope however things have turned around a little bit and he has decided to properly restore it. Either way it is a killer car and one of my favorite magazine covers!
Could never get past the filled quarter windows. Even when the car came out on the cover...I was young, but knew right from wrong. Otherwise jewel of a hot rod...
To me, that's what makes the car special... Well, that and the R&C cover... You'd never do that to a 5w these days. It's something that would only be done back in the day.
Cool car and like others I was watching the thread until it vanished. At that time I recall some negative comments about the direction the "Restoration" was going...... Love the cover with the young Gene Winfield polishing the custom in the background. Torchie
The restoration doesn't look bad from what was posted. It could be a lot worse given the direction rodding has taken in the last few years. I cringe when I imagine saw blades rust and empty shell casings.
This sounds like it will be very interesting to follow along and see what comes up. I am along for the ride with this one.
I am a little disappointed it has been updated with boxed chassis, T5 & open drive BUT if it means that it will be driven and seen instead of been locked away I think that is a fair trade off. Four HAMBers have worked on the Thompson coupe which is really cool. Hopefully once the car has been unveiled the build threads can be updated. Is the debut going to be done at GNRS?
Not sure how accurate the 1953 film was but the color of the original appears to be a prettier, richer green to me. Even so, I like what I see so far.
You should have seen how bad of shape it was actually in when the restoration was started. Because of the excellent craftsmanship of those who started it, it was saved from total disrepair and becoming scrap. And yes, unfortunately it has a Tremec and a winters QC.
Well thank god for small gifts that it didn't end up with an LS motor and twenty inch chrome wheels then.
No doubt, that white on white Ford, with the Olds grill is killer!! Combination of Kandy green, chrome and white top insert gives me the warm and fuzzies. Look at ole' Gene go. JT
I had a complete thread when I built the chassis but the owner raised a fit and made me delete it if you remember Ryan, Tim Young at Irrational Metalworks did all the sheetmetal work and really saved this car, I credit him for allowing me to be able to help, with the chassis work, there's lots of pics on my Instagram Dirtys Speed Shop
Maybe it gets red wheels It looks fine to me, and if the Tremac is the only "sacrilege", I can live with that, even if it was my car.
I don't remember that... but, I saw evidence of it... Like I said, weird deal. I'm really curious about this car...
