They sure were. It has been a long time since I have seen a good military surplus store.

  2. Maggie, for years my Dad would rent a little Aloha Trailer from a guy on the next street and we'd take off for the coast
Fort Stevens, Honeyman, Cape Lookout, all the big parks with water, bathrooms and showers. Pulling the thing over the years behind our '50 Plymouth DeLuxe, the 60 Plymouth Wagon and finally the Mighty Chief, our 389 63 Pontiac Catalina wagon!

What fun it was, not super crowded (no reservations needed even in August), cooking on a Coleman stove, gigantic beach log fires, the smell of woodsmoke, people talking and laughing in the darkness and by lantern light. NO loud music, NO radios even. No fights, no trouble Dogs, kids, the sound of the surf.....wonderful times for me.

  3. They are all gone, replaced with junk made just to sell in surplus stores!
If you weren't around it's hard to imagine the unbelievably huge amount of stuff made for WW2! They were STILL selling it off into the late 60's! The early 60's were crammed with everything, EVERYTHING you can imagine, cheap and useful and fun!

The last pic is a modern one showing the main hall. Built by the WPA during the depression, features hand carved wood sculptures on the stairs as balustrades and freestanding decorations , that humongous fireplace, finished wood EVERYTHING
Yes, there is ALWAYS a St Bernard complete with cask in residence, has been for over 80 years! A fantastic place!

  18. The no reservations days are pretty much over - it can be difficult to get your foot in most places, although you can luck out mid-week with cancellations in the summertime, winter is the best time to get spots.
My little trailer is patiently waiting for me to cobble enough money together to fix her up.
