  1. Fred, all I'm getting are links to Photobox and "you do not have access to this album" messages when I click on 'em. :(

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Photobucket sucks. :D
I load my pictures directly from my computer to the Hamb, no photo hosting bullshit and they stay where I put them.
    Easy.

And so.... the madness begins. Starting small and taking baby steps........ for now. Since this is the offspring of the first madness, this film clip came to mind.

    Got it Fred.
You were right, it is the later housing, nothing wrong with that.
I've "carved out" a few of them myself, used cut off wheels and grinders, had a guy do one for me once, he used a torch, was not pretty, took some finessing to save it.
That will work great for you, nice round, consistantly shaped tubes for welding on your mounts, etc.
I don't recall what you plan on using for wheels, you may end up having to narrow this housing. When I built my roadster, I did not want highly positive front-set wheels due to using true knock offs, I actually added 1&1/4" to one axle tube.

  9. Best way; always sucks when you go back to look at a tech or someone's pictures and they are GONE.
Lots of spoiled tech threads here due to the OP using photo-sharing services.

I'm really not far enough in to consider tire and wheel combos. When I see that bridge approaching I'll consider wheel offset or narrowing the rear. My next job will be building the frame. The issue is the weather. The frame table I'm using is heavy and getting to it will have to wait for the rain to let up here. It's in a guys garage and where the table is located is surrounded by a soaked lawn. Not willing to risk getting a trailer stuck, he's waiting for dryer conditions. If it was up to me, the frame would be done by now, but I'm being VERY patient. He's doing me a favor by also supplying the metal for the frame. So, I sit doing research and planning.

Honestly guys, I'm just glad to be back in the game.

  11. So you telling us that it rains in Texas Fred, heck, I'm just a wee bit stunned and amazed to read that. I'm glad it is you that has to be patient as I used all mine up 40 years ago or so when I gave the fags away.

Been awhile since I updated you fellas with my progress (or lack thereof).

    Fred,
Good score on the 9". I sorta did the same thing as you, but mine came from a 1968 E100 van haha. I think I gave a friend $50 for it, then sold off the 3rd member as it was 28 spline 3.23 open carrier for $50. I ended up narrowing it quite a bit, and I had 31 spline axles made for it (Dutchman narrowed it, put on new bearing housing ends, and made the axles). If you end up going this route, you can upgrade to the larger drum brakes some of the 9" had (which mine didn't have initially). They just build it into the axle offset. Anyway, a few things to consider if you find yourself heading down that road.

I have most of the clutch linkage sorted out. I'm just sanding and finishing the parts, then I'll shoot some photos. I'm also on the fence about using the T5...... I have an OT daily driver that needs to go away (once I can either replace it or eliminate the need for reliable transportation... which is my personal favorite option lol). Anyway, point being, it has a T56...... and I was thinking that might be cool. A bit more work and $$ is involved to get that particular trans to function with mechanical linkage, and then relocating the shifter would cost some decent $$, too. I think I will pass on it for now, though. Maybe for the next project!

I got a call from Russel the powder coater before Thanksgiving (as I was loading up to head to Boise). My parts were done! So, I spent the whole weekend wondering what they looked like!

Well, I found out last night! WOW!!!! Russel knocked it out of the park! He still needs to finish the antique white color in the web of the axle, but my God he did an awesome job! Super stoked on that. In person, they look like each part was dipped into a giant vat of the deepest gloss black paint this world has to offer.... just beyond pleased with the results.

Yes, these parts are on my bed. Yes, I am single. No, at this particular moment, that doesn't bother me!

That powder coating looks nice. Still trying to figure out my own powder coat oven because up here our powder coat shops charge too much for what they do.
Was your guy expensive or reasonable ?

  14. Sooo Tim, you sleeping on the floor then ???:( The parts look amazing even in the photo's so the bar has been set now so all other parts will have to be finished to that standard. Oh, you show rodder...:D:D

Thanks guys. I'm stoked. And whip, you're right. This pile of parts sets the bar for the rest of the build. Guess I should get back to sanding soon lol.

I'm going to publish the price I paid because I think he did an excellent job, especially considering the price. Not at all trying to brag. Keep in mind I did a lot of the prep myself, but he gave each part his finishing touches. As an aside, he also powder coated my wheels (which were in really sad shape) for a totally reasonable price, and I left all of the prep work on those to him.

I paid $265 for the front suspension pieces to be powder coated all one color, which is the gloss black you see above. We are experimenting with the two tone antique white inside the webs of each part, so I'm sure the price will go up for that haha. But totally worth it.

If any of you are interested in using him, his name is Russel, he does this on the side for fun, and he is in the Portland, Oregon area. PM me for contact info.

Again, thank you for the positive feedback. I could use some motivation as of late.

Maybe if you came and helped your old Kiwi pal, you might get more motivated. :D

Actually, if you are still on your enforced vacation, you should be doing something constructive, eh?

Yes, Merry Christmas to all. I've been busy in the garage trying to get a few things done so that I can get back to work on the RPU.
I did find a powder coater here and took my tri power intake and the mummert valley cover to him today.
