Hot Rods Tired of homogenized hotrods

Seems like I'm seeing a lot of the same kinds of builds lately. I think many of us have forgotten that in the golden age of hot rodding there was no set formula. Some cars had bobbed fenders , weird noses , plain ugly stuff .
I think that a lot of us think a flathead , 32 shell and a rake makes a hot rod. I wanna see some cars that are traditional and outside of the box. Past or present. I'll start off with my own.

That's right, quit trying to be different follow the herd. Not! That is why my Sig file says "Thinking outside the box in a traditional sort of way" meaning that I use parts that were available at the time to build my stuff out of. But not always the same way. Be an innovator with the vintage parts at hand. Look at Bill Kens odd rod or anything that Mickey Thompson built. Look at how the pioneers of our hobby did things and let your creativity build on that.

You touch on an interesting subject. When I set out to build my Model A, I wanted it different enough to not be a "me too" but similar enough to fit with what I thought was traditional. Another concern was building a car that would not stand the test of time (think square headlights) Also, it had to be something I could do mostly myself from mostly Ford stock stuff. Yes--I have the 32 Grill but it's the only piece of repop sheet metal. The body is a "Special" Coupe, the engine and driveline have a few touches different than most. Actually almost anywhere you look on this car you will find something different than a "me too" car. If I had to do it again--probably would do some details different but for now, I'm pretty happy with how this car is working out. Then again, I kinda like almost all the stuff I see on the HAMB.

How about a 34 Chevy Master? It doesn't have a flathead, (has a 331 Caddy), or a 32 shell. It is being built as a late 50's - early 60's "gasser", so maybe it's more of a drag car than a hot rod.

 

Nuthin wrong with a 32 shell. Your car is unique . I like the fenders.

Mine has a 32' grill shell but I would like to think its built differently enough to stand apart but still fit the traditional feel?! Like everything, there will away's be a trend...

 

Good thread.
A good number of builds are "me too" because for two reasons imho.
1.They like a certain look and if it's a common look that's ok with them,they don't mind.
2.Resale.Not everyone keeps a ride forever and and a "in the box" design is easy to sell.
A friend of mine is working on a roadster with the track T nose.He thinks it's a fantastic look.
I wouldn't even look at it at a 2 car car show.Can't stand it.
That's the beauty of the hobby.Personal choice. Build the car that makes you want to drive it.
One thing about out of the box design that has been around forever.Not all are great successes with the general masses.Take a look at many of the little magazines and even the big mags from 1950-62.
A number of those magazine featured cars would start epic posts of anguish/disgust/dismay if built today.

 

Unpasteurized '40:

 

Not sure if mine qualifies as unpasteurized .The salt flat chop is getting done a lot now..Maybe too much..But it is outside the norm because a lot of trad-rod purists turned their nose up at it..Guess its the carbs sticking through the hood some dislike but I don't care.I like it and its a real hotrod.

 

In thinking about this some more: if you're paying for it and you build it and like it, that's good enough for me. I love looking at all the different features I spot in the many different cars out there.

 

My 31 rumble, any guesses on the grill shell ATTACH=full]3090182[/ATTACH]with flathead power.

 

So far I really like every car I have seen in this thread except the bright green one,grille ruins it for me.Just shows that if your car suits you it is doing everything it needs to do.
