Hot Rods Tired of homogenized hotrods

  1. not a ford, not black or red, chassis painted copper color, full interior, fenders, not raked, rumble lid, hubcaps........does it qualify here? DSCF4271.JPG

Me thinks we are in modern times and the possibilities are limited due to the traditional focus here. If we do venture outside the box many times even if tastefully done it just doesn't wash here. That said there is an huge amount of forgotten or past mechanical innovation to be played around with and can work.
Can't beat classic hotrod innovation it is timeless and if you have seen it and like it well you build it into your ride. It is a mass thing.
Thinking outside the box is not the norm. I happen to think the creative box thinking happened with the rod I own. Not my creativity but it is different and surely many don't like it but many others and I do and it could have been done back then (and most things about the car are typical you could argue).
Of course this thread is not about pleasing the masses. Many outside the box thinkers here...glad for that. Keep the dream alive and make what is old new again.
One other thing to note is again traditional or old style building is a niche thing. Percentage wise this style is not huge even though looking at this sites membership one may think otherwise. I notice this when at cruises...not many Hamb friendlies and yes that is a lonely thing somewhat. This of course varies city to city as well.
One more thing...it is nice that the HAMB has a forum to support things traditionally inspired so we can play around a little and create as our past and present enthusiasts (Hotrodders) would have and continue to do so...That is where I think I fit into while appreciating and respecting the other areas.
    Merry Christmas everyone.

Having something other then a SBC puts you up on the pecking order. SBCs are good and CHEAP. Maybe that is why every one has one.

Good points, Pete, AVATER post #13.
FWIW, I think you could do a "quick change" with some of Kevin s Hamb AERO Discs.
But it's also cool like it is, haven't ran across that pic of your A on here.

I like deuce shells on deuces, maybe a 30 31 A but other than that I like the shell that came on the car. This is my odd rod( at least around my parts) IMG_0130.JPG

Tradition means repeating what others before you have done.

Pushing-the-envelope will get you pushed right off this board.

Can you imagine how many great Hotrod ideas over the years have been either swept aside as too out there and just ended up as a plan not executed or sitting in wrecking yards and back pastures. Peer pressure to do otherwise in this hobby is quite prevalent. That is why it is great to see lost and forgotten time capsules discovered periodically here from time to time, some full of cool modifications reflecting things that mattered to the car cultures represented here. Of course many members here have lived through much of these eras and we can glean from them or they share their thoughts and memories much to our appreciation. The unique thing is we can create with the former eras covered here in mind when we make and modify the vehicles. This is a big part of the ambience of this site...period (no pun intended). That does not mean boring or cookie cutter either. I like a local breweries saying up this way. "100 years behind the times and proud of it" (good beer too...).

  16. I'll post mine up. It looks very retro and the same as all the rest,,, That is until you really look at it. It's not built by the Tardell Book at all. It will also end up Full fendered. I actually had a plan before I started the parts Pile. Oh, yes it runs a 32 Grill Shell.

Actually, you are tired of HOMOGENEOUS hotrods-all the same-not HOMOGENIZED hotrods-all mixed together. Merry Christmas.

  18. My T is just a little different, 8 years later and I wouldn't mind putting an A grill shell on it now. I built the car around a grill shell I found in the attic of my garage, which is off an old hit n miss. The car would have never been built if I didn't find that shell but changing things around is how they were done.

I spy some ratrod chain on the cowl. How are you going to run full fenders with the stance you have the rear tires are above the wheel wells already?

  20. The chain is for lifting the body off by myself when needed. No R-R garbage here. The Roadster will actually get real paint. As for rear fenders and the body reveal, notice I'm still under construction. You'll have to wait and see how this comes together.

I see you are thinking way outside the box with a termite car. and then the audacity of putting a Chevy in a Chevy. I really like your car.

  24. A 1929 Willys Whippet with a 1952 Desoto Hem and a 1956 Olds Gauge cluster sure isn't your typical Homogenized Hotrod!! Been driving the hell out of it for 2 years and made a 9 hr drive without any stiffness. Probably drove it 10,000 miles in the 2 years.
Matter of fact after we all got out of our cars I was ready to do it again!! Chevys looked like armored steel compared to the lack there of of steel on these cars. I swear it was half wood!!! If you removed all the wood from the door, you just had a door skin!!!

I don't necessarily agree. I think that's a pretty common misconception. Just because you are building a traditional or traditionally styled car, doesn't mean there isn't room for creativity and innovation.

  26. I agree. Most cars built back in the day in the back alley garages would have been thrown off this site!! Then there were customs that looked like hell in todays standards and even back then!! Some were really cool and some not so much. I like seeing customs of today with the past.

There has been quite a number of Hotrods and Customs of the yesteryear discussed and pictured here (on the HAMB) with due bandwidth and some were shall we say lacking in certain places but definitely relevant to the evolution of the hobby or craft of building. I find the membership generally accepting of these as such. It is all good. Some of the fugly ducklings had many creative/trendsetting things as well to offset other features less desirable. The ones that missed the cut well we will never know what made them tick unless someone goes hey this someone I knew years ago did this...it was creative, ahead of it's time and made sense. Each individuals vision is like the wind as much now as it was back then.

I offer that traditional builds are just the respect for the trends that were popular in the time. To me the hot rod you build must only make the builder happy period. Different is ok , just different, we all know cars that seeem butt ugly to us but were the pride of the builder . If a flattie and a A on 32 rails floats your boat then build it and enjoy it. I have alway found it amusing people bashing rods with SBC engines, they are damm good engines , To me this hobby/passion has always been about guys who love their cars and build and enjoy them . I think HAMB is a great forum to share and learn ideas from other rodders but does not present any level of acceptance on what is cool or otherwise. If you build one from scratch or buy your parts from Speedway and just put it together you still are enjoying your hot rod and thats what its all about!
