I just saw this poking my nose around and this is a Tasco looks like 1949 by the blueprint. Why post it here...This is the stuff back then that people saw and where no doubt influenced by in their quest for Hotrod/Custom cardom. Imagine even further influences came also from the varied Coachwork company cars. Interesting stuff.

I have just added this as further inspiration for that generation back in the day and I believe it still inspires...

Another interesting thing about the vehicles above one is a factory produced for consumer use and the other is a race car. There is a link posted below the pic. Don't know anything about it other than it is wild looking. Think about the Corsair. All this stuff was fueling the dreamers of then and even today.

  3. I think that there has always been a blending of street and race in hot rodding.

The big distinction has always been that the average Joe has to got to work, and feed the family and not many of the average Joe could ever really afford family and a dedicated race car so some corners were cut. For example a guy like me who would have been driving the car that got raced when there was enough money to pay the gate may use a cut down original gill shell as opposed to a hand formed custom made unit, or even a tractor grill to simulate a streamlined grill seen on an LSR vehicle.

Just some thoughts here not necessarily gospel.

I was thinking the same thing. Seeing a lot of what not to do on this thread.

The car pictured isn't a Crosley, it's Gordon Buehrig's Tasco. The description of it follows the pictures in the article you linked.

My apologies all for the error. I have corrected that information. Thanks 50fraud for pointing that out and correcting the information I posted in error. Looks to be 1949 not 1935 as well. It is North American however and no doubt was exposed to the masses including creative thinkers. Another interesting thing I gleaned from reading about this car is it was designed by as you said Gordon Buehrig whom also designed the Cord 810.

One of the other influences of auto uniqueness some good/some bad was the worldly roots of the people involved just looking at names.

  12. From the sublime to the ridiculous :D

There will always be one constant in hot rodding, "some things just don't work." I hate to admit it but I found that out the hard way. ;)

I am always intrigued by Hotrod traditional trends and again don't know it all (not even close). That low slung roadster look in this period pic below stands out here among the High...boys and further to that surprises me a little as I honestly thought the look was newer (pic looks to be late 40's). Definitely similarities to the rod you posted. Does that thing have Jag wheels? Cactus1 I think you meant favorite period hotrod survivor...correct. That is a little different for sure. Thanks

All hot rods are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Throughout the early years many styles and modifications were tried. Those that survived to be copied and reproduced are the ones that are most pleasing to the eye. Since taste is subjective there is room for a fair amount of variety in what is favored.

  18. I've noticed in a couple pics, they ran wires on the rear and solids up front.

That is a pretty close copy. I wasn't sure if the top pic was staged. The side panels on the original look a little different. Those guys hammered many of those cars together quite quickly. Perhaps that will be this years project the hood and side panels. You know you've got the period look when your not sure if the pic is old or not...Those events really do ooze what this is all about. It is even more special when you can push the vehicles without speed restrictions and in a safe location. Similar to the HAMB Drags. Thanks Mike...Happy New Year

Look at the background cars ( and check out the guy with his foot on the rear tire- nice argyles!)
Check out the U-Tube interview with Nils- good stuff.
I actually donated some parts to the build- the front "smiley" axle was under a trailer a guy gave me! ( he was going to junk it! Not on my watch!)
Happy New Year back at ya! Be safe everyone.

They are really out there and that one looks like its driven. Do you know the story on it? Hey I remember being at a friends friends farm and and was looking around the barn and saw some rusty blue tin through an opening in in the side crawled in and it was a 40 Plymouth body cut into pieces in a pile and I went in further walked into a hay filled room and saw another 40 Plymouth just sitting there fairly rough and blue with 1967 plates on it. It was not a desirable but sort of surreal at the same time. It is what it is. Enjoy em when ya see um. Even better if you own em.

Here are two of the cars that Plowboy built. He called the red one, The Atomic Punk & the blue one, The Lunar Lander. Definitely not homogenized.

They have a unique look and a couple tricks no one does anymore.
Pics are stolen from a 32 grill shell thread. I love 32 grills . Just wanted to show you can use one and still have a different look.
