Barry Lobecks '40 in Hot Rod. I was really knocked out when this issue came out.

That's part of the reason I had such a passion for polished American 5 spokes. I went to the trouble of finding a set at different swap meets back in the 80's (because American had stopped making them) and had them polished. But then American introduced the Torque Thrust II's and you can get them polished fairly cheap so suddenly they were everywhere. That's when I decided to go to the Halibrand's. :)

Mr Lobeck really knew how to build a hot rod. His cars certainly had "the look" I think you are far better off with the straight spoke wheels, those damned curved spoke torque thrust 2's look awful in my humble opinion and they are not similar enough to the original D spokes to be traditional. good for you for going with the halibrands!!

  16. Exactly! I still have the straight spoke's, but I thought a change was in order partly because some of the younger "traditionalist" were not very fond of my 5 spokes because they just assumed they were the newer ones and didn't know the difference between the straight spoke American's of the 60's and the new TT 2's. :)

Here is one of my old 15x8's doing duty as a table in the garage.

  17. Lobeck's old '40 was pretty dang cool, but sits a bit high, by today's standards. ;-)

  18. Gene Sonnen's coupe, back when he had polished 5 spokes, is what caused my dream of someday having a set for my coupe. Due to my budget, I didn't go for vintage wheels, but just bought the TTO's with the "as cast" spokes, to keep the uneducated folks from asking about my Cragars.

  19. ..............I feel what you're saying, and yes by todays standards it probably does sit a little tall. When I grew up in East Tennessee we called that a Moonshine Rake 'cause once you got it loaded it sat nice (and unobtrusively) level.:D

  20. Don't get me wrong...back then, it was one of the '40's that everybody held in high regard. It's just funny to look back at the cars from that era and notice how the preferred stance has changed over time.

That was when he was just "Barry Lobeck" not BARRY LOBECK yet.:D That car really made a big splash at the time.

Lobeck's 40 might sit a bit high for todays ideas but it sure works for me!! Was a very similar black coupe in Reedley Ca in 60-61 with a dual quad solid lifter 283 that really had to looks and sounded great!! Sat about the same too but had chrome reverse wheels.

bill commane's coupe in the 58 hotrod magizine is listed as a 40. but it looks like a 39 with 40 front sheet metal and 40 rear fenders. really neat car though
